AR Program Info

Below is a general description of Accelerated Reader for your
information. We hope you will encourage your children to participate.
Accelerated Reader is a recognized tool, not only in improving reading
skills, but also in developing a positive attitude toward reading and
improving individual self-esteem.

The Accelerated Reader Program is as easy as 1 – 2 – 3.

1. Select a book. Students make their own choice from thousands of
outstanding titles on the Accelerated Reader book list. The books range in
reading level from 1st Grade through the secondary level. Each book listed
has its reading level and point value listed.

2. Read the book. Students then read their book at their own pace. (Many
students get so excited about the program that they read every chance they
get.)

3. Take the test. Students take a computerized test featuring 5 or 10
multiple choice comprehension questions. This program tells students how
many questions he or she answered correctly. It shows the answers for the
questions missed and awards POINTS. Once they have taken a test on a
specific title they may not test on that title again.

The Point System
After the student has completed the book and taken the test, he or she gets
immediate feedback in the form of READING POINTS. The program awards points
based on the length and difficulty of the book and the student’s
comprehension. When the student passes a test, the teacher/parent can rest
assured that the student really has read and understood the book. This
single feature (reading points)

1. gives students instant reinforcement for their efforts

2. provides teachers with accurate measurement of each students’ performance

3. gives students, teachers, and parents an easy way to see the child’s
progress in the program.

The Accelerated Reader Program is designed around a system of goals and
recognition that students find naturally motivating.

1. students like using computers

2. students appreciate the fairness and accuracy of the reading point system

3. students respond best to immediate reinforcement

4. straight-forward tests and frequent testing opportunities remove
the “fear of failure”. If they read a book attentively, they will earn
reading points.

MOTIVATION FEATURES:
Out of Uniform Sticker
Every month your child has the opportunity to earn an out-of-uniform sticker
by reaching his/her minimum number of points. The minimums are: Grade 2 -
4
points; Grade 3 - 6 points; Grade 4 - 7 points; Grade 5 - 8 points; Grade 6 -
10 points; Grade 7 - 11 points; and Grade 8 - 12 points.

Reading Wall of Fame
The top ten students from each homeroom are updated weekly and posted on our
Wall of Fame. It is also listed in the Lourdes Lowdown.

Point Clubs
A separate point club at various point-level milestones has been created:
When a student has earned 250 points, they become a member of the 250
Point Club, and so on. Students receive recognition when they join a Point
Club and are awarded their pin. Their name is then posted on our Reading
Wall of Fame outside the Library.

Point Redemption
Students have the ongoing opportunity to redeem their accumulated points.
Incentives range from pencils, bookmarks and books to clip book lights.
These prizes are on display in the library.
