Kindergarten Connection

Week of May 14, 2012

Can you believe this will be our last newsletter for the year? In just 4 more school days, your child will be a FIRST GRADER!

It has been a privilege teaching your children this year! I have learned as much from them as they have learned from me. They are a SMART BUNCH! I hope you and your child have had a wonderful kindergarten experience. If there is anything you think can be improved, please let me know. I always welcome suggestions/feedback!!!

Math: We continued to play math games that reinforce addition, subtraction, telling time, numeration, measuring and geometry.

Reading:

We also practiced the sight words we have already learned by playing bingo, memory, and other fun games!

Space:During this unit read a ton of books about space and we learned the 8 planets and their order from the sun. Ask your child to name the planets in order.J We even created our own model of the solar system to share with our families. Ask your child the name of our galaxy. We learned about the moons phases and made each phase using our mouths and an Oreo…what a delicious way to learn! We learned about the moon’s craters and tried making some of our own! We also learned about stars and constellations. We were all able to find the Big Dipper in our classrooms! We made the Big Dipper using marshmallows (Stars) and connecting them with pretzels (so we

could see the picture a little more clearly). We also made a model of the

Big Dipper that we could take home! Make sure you ask your child to show you his/her constellation.

Religion: This week we learned about God’s stories in the Bible. We discussed the difference between the Old and New Testament, too.  We read Zaccaheus,Jonah and the Big Fish,Daniel and the Lion.

I will be sending home the Chapters we did not cover this year. You can use them as you like over the summer or recycle the pages.

Field Day:Next Wednesday is Field Day. Please make sure your child has on their team color (or something close), a snack, two drinks (no soda), and a LUNCH.

Library Books: All St. Al’s Library books need to be turned in…if you have lost a book, please let me know and I can tell you the cost to replace it.
