Spelling

The 5th Grade Spelling program will use skills instruction (phonics, word origins, spelling rules, and usage), your child's everyday writing, and word study on specific words to help your child grow into a lifelong speller. The emphasis is placed on accurately spelling words used in 90% of the writing we see on a daily basis. Your child will also work to better his/her proofreading skills.

Grades will be based on everyday writing, cloze story tests, skills tests, proofreading activities, and periodic dictation of sentences.

I will introduce each unit with five core words to practice for the week. They will also copy a list of 20 Level 5 words into their planners. They should master these by the end of 5th Grade. The lesson continues with various activities such as Stretch It, Fix It, Sort It, and Finish It that focus on the core words of that unit.

English

We begin the year with a review of 4 Kinds of Sentences, declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. Chapter 1 continues with combining sentences using the conjunctions and, but, and or. Look for your child to come home singing "Conjunction Junction what's your function?" Next, we will cover simple and complete subjects and predicates.

Our writing assignment this unit will be a personal narrative. We will focus on the 5 steps of the writing process, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing before presenting our pieces to the class.
