6th grade Reading
11-23-09 We are starting our Independent Book Unit this week. The students get to choose their next novel. I have several books ranging from fantasy to historical fiction. I will include the requirements for this assignment and the due dates tomorrow. I am posting several of the sheets they can use instead of post-its. These sheets include the reading strategies and literary elements.
Individual Reading ProjectsReading Strategies Readers gain control over: The students will use the post-its to write down these strategies
10-Make personal connections Relating their experiences and knowledge to Information in the text.
4-Visualize Comprehension when they create mental pictures Of information they understand.
10-Predict/support Engaging in the text, setting purposes, and finding Evidence that supports predictions.
Confirm/ adjust Confirming or adjusting predictions while they read And collect more data.
1-Self-Question Setting purposes and creating interest while they Read by posing questions, then reading to explore Answers.
5-Infer Reading between the lines to determine a character’s Motivation and personality, to discover themes, and To discover main points in text.
0-Context clues To discover a word’s meaning by exploring clues in The sentence.
Literary ElementsThe students will use the post-its to write down the literary elements also.
Setting Plot-initial conflict, climax, resolution Characters Theme
Word Walls-10Included on the walls are: the word, the sentence form the book, the definition, 3 synonyms and 1 antonym.
Character Logs-10Fold a piece of paper in half. On one side write, “What the text says.” On the other side write, “My response to the character.” They are going to write personal reactions and feelings toward the character, and how they resemble or are different from them.
Figurative Language Sheets
Character Suitcases Make and pack a suitcase that one of the characters in the story would take on a trip. Included: Luggage tag with name, address, and destination, memorabilia to decorate the outside of the case, and 10 items they would take with them both tangible and intangible items.
