This has been a fun week learning about the Native Americans. Our field
trip on Tuesday was great. We hiked through the woods learning about how
Indians used the different plants and hunted. The class got to touch many
Indian tools and artifacts. They enjoyed looking at the animals in the
Nature Center and doing their Indian chores. The naturalist did a great job
keeping their attention and teaching them about the Miami and Shawnee Indian
tribes that lived in this area, and telling some Indian legends. It was a
great day!
We welcomed a new student to our class this week! Welcome Aliyah!
We are glad to have you in our class!
In math this week, we finished Chapter 7 on addition. Chapter 8
continues addition with more 2 digit addition with regrouping, or "carrying"
as we used to call it in gradeschool. We are continuing to practice math
facts. I am switching up the timed tests this quarter. We will be
concentrating on the 13 and 14 facts this month and will be taking shorter
tests focussing on those facts.
In Language Arts we read several Indian stories this week. We learned
about the importance of the Thunderbird in Indian legends and wrote our own
Thunderbird stories. In Social Studies we read about the Indians of the Great
Plains. We looked at a slide show on the internet about the Sioux Indians.
We also read about the Indians of the Nortwest Coastal area. We made our own
small totem poles. We are also working on a large totem pole for the Pow Wow.
In Religion this week, we discussed the ten commandments. We are
practicing the Act of Contrition. We also discussed the feast of All
Souls.
I hope everyone is working on saving a coffee can or a similar container.
We will use them to make Indian drums, which we will play for your
entertainment at the Pow Wow! I also need a few more helpers at the Indian
stations that day. The Pow Wow is on Friday, November 20th from 1:00 -
2:15. We will present a short presentation about the Native Americans.
Afterwards the children will participate in several Indian stations doing
crafts or playing a game. The Indian projects will be on display and
everyone will be welcome to partake of some Indian snacks. Parents,
grandparents, and siblings are all invited, so please mark your calendars and
join us if you can!
Today is report card day! I am very proud of our class for working so
hard this quarter.
