For the Week Ending

November 13, 2009

This week we have been working on what is a sentence and what is just a bunch of words thrown together.  We’ve also talked about the four types of sentences: statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.  I’m trying to get them to read these types of sentences aloud with expression in their voices.  Some of them  feel “silly” saying an exclamation sentence with such gusto!  We’ll get there.

On Monday we will begin reading one of my favorite books: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Just a reminder–don’t watch either of the movies!  We will be doing that here and comparing them to the book.

Next week in spelling we will work on unit 13, then the two days before Thanksgiving break we will do Unit 12 which is the review unit.

In math we are finishing up subtraction of larger numbers.  One of the hardest parts is remembering the facts.  Tuesday I will give them a test on addition and subtraction of 3 and 4 digit numbers.

We’re talking Reptiles!!! We talked about the Five Characteristics that make a creature a member of the Reptile Club: Backbone, Scales, Lungs, Cold-Blooded, and Lays Eggs.  Yesterday we began making our own anaconda that will stretch 30 feet long!  Yes, I said 30 feet.  We read that the longest anaconda was 30 feet long.   When we measured it in our classroom we found that it would stretch from our lockers to the other wall and 2 feet into Mrs. Holscher’s room.  WOW!!  We surely don’t want to run into one of those!  We also read that the komodo dragon can be up to 10 feet long (or 5 desks lined up in a row) and weigh up to 300 pounds.  These five characteristics (which are in their Science notebook), along with other information we will be getting over the next week and a half will be on the test which will be on Tuesday, November 24th.  Please start studying now.

We will be scheduling conference times on Wednesday afternoon.  I’ll send the times home on Thursday.   Reminder: conferences are on Tuesday, November 24th, we will have a 1:30 dismissal.  Children should pack their lunch and a “healthy” drink.  Please, nothing carbonated, as usual.

Bring in your coins next week for the “Give the Gift of Reading.” This is getting us ready for the Book Fair—see the Friday packet for details!
