FOR THE WEEK OF 09 NOVEMBER 2009:
The "Honor Our Veterans" Issue
The tests are graded and we bid farewell to chemistry, as we meet the first of the physics chapters head on. Because the material is getting more difficult, I advised students last week to prepare themselves for frequent 10 pt quizzes over material read for assignments. After 10 quizzes have been given, I will average them together for a test grade. I have found that doing this helps students to stay focused on their study of the content, while they review difficult concepts on a regular basis.
On Tuesday, I'll distribute the paper copy of the requirements for the first major project of the year, "The Effects of Gravity and Acceleration on Fragile Projectiles of Avian Origin" -- A.K.A. "The Amazing Egg Drop"!
I also uploaded the files for the directions and grading rubric. They can be found under the PPT Reviews and Files icon. Students will have to budget their time well for this project as there are 3 important pieces to it, and 3 corresponding deadlines to meet. [That information is posted under the Grade Assignments icon].
Over the years, this project still remains a favorite with students. It's the one they continue to want to repeat and, for me, one that demonstrates science at its best. The date has been set. The challenge is tough. The bar is set high. The students are ready. Onward and upward we go! :)
Hug a veteran this week! And, enjoy what's left of this amazingly warm weather.
