There are no "bench sitters" in science class! As a general rule, corrections are NOT offered for additional points or to boost a grade. However, it is my expectation that you will always do corrections to discover the answers to those questions you missed. Because you must pass specific standards in science, extra credit reports and/or projects are NOT offered. I am available to help you before and after school on most days, during recess on non-duty days, and during study hall. My expectation is that if I ask you to come for help prior to a test, that you will make arrangements to do so. Other students seeking additional assistance should see me to schedule a time to meet that works for both of us. Most of the time, if you receive a "D" or an "F" on a test, you will be required to bring it back signed by a parent. Failure to do so could result in an inelegibility warning. Homework Policy and Meeting Deadlines 1. It is expected that all assignments will be completed neatly and turned in on the day they are due. Don't come to class with excuses; come to class prepared! All homework assignments are posted on the website. To come to class not knowing what the assignment was is not an option. When you are absent, please have a parent call for homework. If you miss one day in the junior high, it can take you a week to make up the work you missed. If you are sick, you have the number of days you were out of school to make up assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. If you are not sick, and were out of school for other reasons, generally, you must make up tests and quizzes the day you return. Tests are announced several days in advance. If you are absent, and the test date has already been announced, my expectation is that you will be prepared to take it on the day you return. Extenuating circumstances may negate this policy, and will be handled on a case by case basis. You are responsible for having your agenda with you at all times, for recording your daily assignments in it. You are also responsible for bringing to study hall or taking home the appropriate textbooks and other materials needed to complete assignments, and asking for missed work in the event of an absence. HOMEWORK POLICY: You are responsible for managing your homework assignments. I will not ask for nor will I remind you of homework that has not been turned in, even when you are absent. As a general rule, failure to have homework on the day it is corrected will result in you receiving a zero for the missed assignment. Every missed assignment will result in a 30-minute, after-school detention. The missed homework assignment will be made up at that time, and you will receive one-half the points earned. Missing more than two assignments per quarter could result in other serious consequences being assessed. If you are absent, you are responsible for turning in any work that was corrected or collected during your absence. I will not ask you for it. 2. My expectation is that your assignments, reports, and projects will be turned in on the day they are due and all deadlines will be met unless you have talked with me to cite extenuating circumstances that necessitate turning something in late. Late reports and projects will result in a one letter grade drop for each day they are late. Not meeting deadlines will result in a percentage point drop for each day the work is late. Cumulatively, all of these, coupled with poor performance in other graded categories, could potentially lead to you receiving a failing grade in science. 3. DUE DATES: Due dates are firm. An exception may be made for special circumstances, but only when you discuss them with me, on or before the day the assignment is due. Before or after school, at recess, or during study hall are appropriate times to talk with me, rather than before, during, or after class. 4. I will not chase you for assignments or any other work not turned in or late. There are about 130 of you and 1 of me. Remember, responsibility, accountability! You may receive a "Bonus Buck" at my discretion. You may be awarded a pass for a perfect test score, exemplary class participation, or other actions deemed worthy of a reward. Daily Science Trivia or DST for Grade 8 ONLY 1. Prior to the start of class, a Daily Science Trivia (DST) question will be posted. There will be five different questions given during the week. 2. On the first day of each full week, you will pick up a trivia answer slip as you enter the classroom. (They are located in the green basket on the back table). 3. You will write your name, class, PIN #, and answer on the slip. 4. My classroom helper will pass a container around, collecting the slips. 5. As soon as the slips are collected, everyone should be ready to begin class. 6. At the end of the day, volunteers will check the slips for each class. They will keep the slips with the correct answers and will discard the slips with the wrong answers. 7. I will draw three winning slips from all the correct answers and will write those names on the white board. I will announce the winners the next day. 8. At the end of each week, I will draw one name from all of the daily winning slips, and that person will get to claim a special prize by drawing a "Golden Ticket" out of a basket. The "Golden Ticket" will have a prize coupon printed on it. It could be a piece of candy from the candy bin, extra credit points, a treasure chest item, a homework pass, etc. |
