5th Grade Social Studies

We begin the new year as Egyptian artists, working on pictures that will be
part of our project display. Then we will begin Chapter 4, Ancient India. In
this chapter we will look at the Indus and Ganges river valleys, the religion
of Hinduism, the beginnings of Buddhism, and the Maurya Empire.

An information sheet on the project was given to the students before the
Christmas break. It includes the following:

Social Studies Mini-Project

Date due - January 27

Size limit - No larger than 9 by 12 inches. Size limit is strictly enforced.

Materials - Main part of project must be handmade. No purchased item (like
Legos)should be used. Small details (figures of people, animals,
etc.) may be used, but the more handmade the display is the
better. (Hint: help recycle waste materials like empty boxes,
            paper towel rolls, etc.)

Assistance - Student may work alone or with one other student. Assistance
from parents in the form of advice and encouragement is great,
but assistance in actually making the project should be kept to
a minimum. The major part of the completed project should be the
student's own work. Use the Library or Internet to research
             ideas for building your project.

Topic of Project - ANCIENT EGYPT (Choose from the list.)
                      Egyptian tomb
                      Egyptian house
                      Egyptian temple
                      Egyptian boat
                      Pyramid
                      Sphinx

Necessary Items - Each project must include a 3 by 5 index card with the
topic and name or names of students neatly printed on it.

                  HAVE FUN MAKING YOUR PROJECT!
