Grade 7

Top Secret Assignment

Now that you’ve met your buddy and you’ve had a chance to get to know him or
her, you’re going to make a Christmas gift for your buddy. You’re going to
write a story which includes both of you.

First: Think of a story line. It can be a realistic story line, a fantasy
story line, a fairy tale story line. . .anything you like. Just be sure it’s
school appropriate.

Then: Write the story. Be sure it follows a typical plot outline—partially
because this is a writing assignment, but mostly because it’s the way good
storytellers do it:

	Introduction
	Rising Action
	Climax
	Falling Action
	Resolution

Some hints:
Be sure you spell your buddy’s name correctly
You and your buddy do not have to be human
Be sure your buddy is seen in a good light
Be sure everything is kid-friendly. Use words they can read. Remember that
they are 6-7 years old!
Use details from your conversations with your buddy. If you know that
he/she
has a dog, likes peanut butter, plays soccer, use that
information
Note: If you have two buddies, include all three of you in one story. We’ll
just print it out twice. Unless you are really ambitious and want to write
two stories. . .which is fine. Just see me.

Then, divide up the story into pages. Your story, including the cover, can be
either 8 or 12 pages long. You can divide up the story in terms of the plot,
in terms of the Clip Art you’ll use, whatever you like. Just think of your
favorite picture book and how it is divided. Split things up that way. I may
even have some samples available for you.

While you are doing the dividing, think of the piece of clip art that will
work best. Jot it down if that helps you.

We’ll be using Publisher to create a book—much like you did with your Poetry
Booklets in 6th grade. Your name, the title, and the year belong on the
cover. The rest is up to you. You’ll be using simple, readable fonts, page
borders, drop caps if you like, and clip art.

We’ll let you know about your deadline. Please don’t disappoint your buddy!
