Biomes -- Grade 4

Students will briefly investigate the following biomes on Enchanted 
Learning: Arctic, Desert, Chaparral (or Scrub), Taiga (or Coniferous 
Forest), Grassland, Tropical Rainforest, Pond, Ocean, Antarctic, Tundra, 
Cave, Temperate Deciduous Forest, Savanna, Prairie, Freshwater Marsh, Swamp, 
Intertidal Zone and Coral Reef.  They will pick ONE biome and create a book 
and diarama all about their choice. The books will be created in Microsoft 
PowerPoint and will include the following information:
Page 1 -- Title Slide 
-Name of your biome in Word Art
-Picture of your biome
-Your name - size 14 bold
Page 2 -- What is a Biome?
-general information about ALL biomes
	-at least 2 pictures of 2 different biomes
         be sure to identify what the biomes are!
Page 3 -- Name of your Biome
      -General information specific to your biome.  This slide uses
       words to describe what is unique about your biome. Font size 12-14
      -What does your biome look like?
      -What is the climate like? Rainy or dry? Cold or hot? Do the seasons 
       change?
      -Do plants grow well here?
      -Are there many animals living here?
      -How much of the earth's surface does your biome cover?
Page 4 -- Location of Your Biome 
      - map and sentence or two explaining where your biome is located
Page 5 -- Plants Found in Your Biome
      -5 or more
- picture of each plant
- label each picture with the name of the plant (Center the name under the
   picture)
Page 6 -- Animals Found in Your Biome 
-5 or more
-picture of each animal
-label each picture with the name of the animal (Center the name under the
  picture)
Page 7* -- Animal and Plant Adaptations --changes or special
      characteristics of the plants or animals that help it survive in 
      this biome.  Please try to include at least 3.
Page 8* -- Did You Know?
       -Interesting fact or facts about your biome. This is something 
        NEW you learned doing this project.  Please include at least 3
Page 9  Works Cited
	-Be sure that you are copying and pasting ALL web addresses and book 
         titles as you do your project
         YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT SOURCES!
Page 10 -- About the Author 
	-Tell us about you!  What do you like to do?  Do you have
 	 brothers, sisters or pets? What are your favorite subjects or 
  	 food? You must write at least 8 sentences about yourself.(Font size
         12-14) You will also include your picture and a picture of you with
         your biome diarama-- we'll take it at school with the digital 
         camera!

**Slides with an *astrick* are slides that will be completed by 
students who finish the others.  Not all students will have these slides in 
their books.**

Please remember to include at least one graphic on every page. 

+++This project will be graded and counted as a Social Studies grade.+++

I will try to keep you up-to-date about what is due each week.  If you miss 
class or do not finish in class, you MUST complete for homework or you may 
stay after school Tuesday through Friday until 4:30 or work before school 
Tuesday through Friday from 8:00-8:30.  Please be sure you ask me one day 
before teh day you want to stay and be sure to bring a note from your 
parents 
giving you permission to be in the lab.  Please be sure you have a way home

OCTOBER 16, 2009
All students should have the research completed for page 3. This is the page 
with specific information about the ONE biome you have choosen.  Information 
should be written on a piece of paper IN YOUR OWN WORDS.  Don't forget to be 
adding your sources to the Works Cited page.  If you are finishing at home, 
save the web addresses to your flash drive.  We will type all information 
into our books next week.  If you do not finish in class, you must finish 
for homework and bring all information with you to class next Friday.

OCTOBER 23, 2009
All students should have their third page completed.  All information should 
be typed in and one picture should be on this page, with a border.  In 
addition, page 4 should be completed.  This page includes a map indicating 
where in the world their biome is located as well as a sentence or two 
describing in words wher their biome is located.  Have a good week!

OCTOBER 30, 2009
All students should have page 6 completed.  This page includes a picture of 
5 animals found in their biome, as well as the name of the animal typed 
below each picture.  Each picture should have a border, size 4.5 pt.  In 
addition, students should check that pages 2, 3 and 4 are complete.

NOVEMBER 6, 2009
All students will make the cover for their book.  The cover must include at 
least one picture of their biome, a title in Word Art and their name, size 
14 Bold in the lower right or left corner.  Students are also responsible 
for finishing slide 5.  This slide includes at least 5 pictures of plants 
that live in their biome.  The plants MUST each be labeled with the name of 
the plant.  Be sure to center the name of the plant under the picture.  
We will also copy and paste three picture of animals that live in their 
biome on a powerpoint slide.  We will print these to be used in art class 
when the students mold animals out of clay for their biome boxes.
