Congratulations! Miller's Tourist Planners has decided to hire you
to help create travel brochures for different countries in Africa! There
are
a lot of places to go, and it is your job to sell your trip so Miller's
Tourist Planners can make some BIG BUCKS!
Your job will be to plan a tour and create a travel brochure to sell your
country as THE place people will want to visit. Your destination is one of
the 53 countries in Africa. As you plan your tour, you will need to explore
the five themes of geography:
*LOCATION
*ABSOLUTE LOCATION is a latitude and longitude (a global location)
or a street address (local location).
*RELATIVE LOCATION is described by landmarks, time, direction or
distance from one place to another and may associate a particular
place with another
*PLACE
*PHYSICAL characteristics include mountains, rivers, soil, beaches,
wildlife, soil.
*HUMAN characteristics are derived from the ideas and actions of
people that result in changes to the environment, such as buildings,
roads, clothing, and food habits.
*HUMAN - ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION
*How humans and the environment affect each other. We change the
environment and then sometime Mother Nature changes it back. For
example, floods in the mid-West, Hurricane Emily (Hatteras), and
earthquakes and mudslides in California.
*Humans adapt to the environment.
*Humans modify the environment.
*Humans depend on the environment:
People depend on the Tennessee River for our water and
transportation. People modify our environment by heating and
coolings buildings for comfort. People adapt to the environment
by wearing clothing that is suitable for summer and winter; rain
and shine.
*MOVEMENT
*The movement of people, the import and export of goods, and ideas
(mass communication, i.e. e-mail)
*REGIONS
*A region is an area defined by common characteristics. We categorize
regions in two basic ways: physical and cultural.
PHYSICAL regions are defined by landforms, climates, soils, and
natural vegetations.(the Australian Outback, the Gobi Desert of
Mongolia, and the Great Plains of the United States.)
*CULTURAL regions are distinguished by language,
religion, lifestyle, politics, and common industry. (the Amish
religious enclaves of south-central Pennsylvania, the old Soviet
Bloc of eastern Europe and Russia, and even the Middle East
*Regions can be any size.
You must answer questions such as:
*What is the LOCATION of this country?
*What is this country like?
*How would you describe the geography? Any UNIQUE LANDFORMS?
*What are some of the MAJOR CITIES?
*How do people use this country?
*How and why have people changed this country?
*What LANGUAGES are spoken?
*What is the CULTURE like?
*What are the CUSTOMS of this country?
*How has this country been affected by the MOVEMENT of people, goods and
ideas?
*What is the SIZE of your country?
*What is the POPULATION?
*What are the major EXPORTS and IMPORTS?
*What is the CLIMATE?
*What are some AREAS OF INTEREST? National Parks, Places to visit, etc.
Now these are suggestions of Miller's tourist Planners, but if you think you
have a better idea what should be included, go ahead! just make sure you
ask
our boss if your idea is a good one.
Be creative. Remember that "a picture tells a thousand words!" Use
graphics! They make your brochure interesting. Try to convey your
information quickly; use bullet points, maps, pictures, etc. All enhance
your brochure and keep your readers' interest. Use colors wisely! Include
facts -- but remember to highlight exciting information about your country
so the reader will want to travel there!
Have Fun! Ask for help when needed!
