Second Grade Information

Here are some helpful hints…

·	Students should be reading independently every day.  Some students 
are reading chapter books and some are reading picture books.  No matter what 
they are reading, they should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes a day.  
There is plenty of class time given to read every day.  Our goal is to have 
each student become an independent reader, but there are times when “partner 
reading” is needed so please use your judgment and read along with your child 
as needed but encourage independent reading too.  Chapter books are very 
difficult for some so help your child by asking what is happening in the 
story and reminding them to bring the book back and forth every day.  Chapter 
books are only read once.  
·	Double-digit subtraction is very hard.  Practice, practice, 
practice.  It will get better, but it will take longer if they don’t know 
their facts.  I remind each student to look at the sign, and then look at the 
top right number to see if they have to regroup (borrow), and then subtract.  
·	By this time of second grade, students should know the routine of the 
class and be able to work independently on some concepts.  It is very 
difficult to move towards third grade when students are not listening and 
looking at the board during instruction.  Almost every assignment is gone 
over orally with examples on the board.  If your child is not completing work 
or making a lot of errors, please set up a conference with me and your 
student to help figure out a plan for your child to be more successful.  An N 
in the Friday Folder should be taken very seriously and improvement should be 
seen the next week.  If a note is written in the assignment book about 
behavior, I would expect a positive change the next day.  These actions by me 
are not done without a constant disruption in class that affects your child’s 
learning and others around them.  Thank you for your efforts to improve our 
classroom atmosphere.
