FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents. Please also see the Welcome to 2B page for further information.
What is the best way to contact you? E-mail! I respond to emails daily. I check before school and after school. I try to check it at least once during the day but that is not always possible. You can also write a note and send it with your child to put in my mail tray. I read these first thing in the morning. You can write a note in their homework book but tell your child so they bring it to me to see. Only use voice mail messages as a last resort.. I tend to forget to check my voice mail. We don't have phones in our rooms and I am not a "phone person" anyway so it is not the best mode of communication for me. Who will be responsible for preparing my child for their Sacraments? That would be Mrs. Doyle in 2A. She will teach Religion class. She and I work closely together and I will be assisting in whatever ways I can. I will be at First Reconciliation and First Communion (barring emergencies) and have been through it many times now so I can help them practice. (If you are confused... I am a practicing Southern Baptist) Patience! We do not begin cursive until third quarter. I ask that students remain very patient and NOT try to learn on their own. It is much easier to teach them the correct way from the beginning than try to correct things that have been learned incorrectly. Habits are hard to break! What is your Discipline Policy? I use a color system for behavior. The children begin the day on green and will move their clip one color for each infraction. The first color is yellow, which is just a warning to get back on track. The second move is red, which is 5 minutes of lost recess. Blue is 10 minutes of recess. If their clip is removed from our classroom stick, they lose all recess and parents may be notified. Most of the violations have to do with disrupting the class or potential for harming themselves or another child. Severe behavior will be dealt with as needed, possibly with a trip to the office, regardless of the color that they are on. I also use an incentive program this year, emphasizing the classroom as a community. Marbles will be added to a jar for things such as compliments from the principal or "specials" teachers, an excellent job of walking through the hallways quietly, waiting patiently while I am called to the hallway or need to speak with another teacher, 100% homework turned in... When the jar is full, we will have a pizza party. Sunday,2nd, 2:00 p.m. The children will need to be in our room by 1:30 p.m. When does my child's work come home? I send all graded work home in your child's Friday folder (on Friday, of course). Please be sure to check other folders throughout the week though for letters or other information. Some weeks there will be more work than others. Please remember that children learn in many ways and only a small part of what they are learning will come home in written form. Why does my child have a number? I assign each child a number on the first day of school. (It corresponds with their number in my grade book.) I use this for the purpose of record keeping and it works wonderfully for me. The children quickly get used to the idea of putting their first name and their number on their papers. I can quickly scan a set of papers and see whose is missing. I can enter grades in my grade book easily. I use the number for many record keeping types of tasks but rest assured, your child is not a number to me! It is simply a system to make my life a little easier! The top grade is an O, the middle grade is an S and the lowest grade is an N. We only have 3 grades in this new system. It will take some getting used to for most of us! Will my child go on any field trips? We go on several trips in second grade. We normally walk to the Covedale Library each month, weather permitting. We usually go to Dunham in the fall to study how plants and animals prepare for winter. In the winter or spring we go to the Museum Center. Permission slips will be sent home prior to any trips, giving you details about the trip. How do you choose chaperones for the field trips? I choose the first volunteers to indicate that they have a desire to chaperone. Room parents are not given priority (since they get to do so much with the children) Covedale Library trips are usually open to anyone who has been fingerprinted and take the protection class. We can have any number. The more the merrier! I like to have at least one parent each month to help keep the children safe as we walk up Glenway. We have P.E. on Wednesday afternoons. Please send the proper gym clothes with your child each week. PUT NAMES on ALL clothing, both uniform and gym clothes. Miss Hope will let you know her rules as to what is appropriate. Please make sure your child's name is in their uniform. When they change for P.E., they frequently drop or misplace pieces of their uniform and then no one wants to claim the missing pieces. Our lost and found fills quickly and usually ends up being put into Mrs. Veder's closet since no one claims them. If your child's name is on the uniform pieces, we can simply put it in the correct backpack. |
