Life Science Concepts

After this unit, students should be able to.......

1. Recognize the stages in the life cycle of a frog and butterfly.

2. Recognize the different habitats (deserts, grasslands, tropical rain
forests) and their characteristics.

3. Explain why animal populations increase or decrease.

4. Give one example of how humans can effect the environment in positive ways
and one example of how humans can effect the environment in negative ways.

5. Recognize the characteristics of reptiles, mammals, fish and amphibians
*Characteristics will be listed on test, you will need to read them carefully
and use them to help answer questions.

6. Read an adaptation of an organism and explain how it helps an
organism survive in its environment.

7. Compare and contrast two animals describing their adaptations.

8. List the basic needs of all organisms (food.energy source, water, air and
shelter)

9. Choose one animal of your choice and explain two physical adaptations that
helps this animal catch its prey in order to survive because food is a
basic need of all organisms.

Vocabulary:
1. adaptations-a structure (a body part) or behavior (something they do/an
action)that helps an organism survive in its environment

2. climate-the weather in a certain place of a period of time

3. habitats-a place where an organisms lives

4. populations-organisms of the same kind that live in the same place at the
same time

5. predators-an organisms that captures and eats other organisms

6. prey-an organism that is captured and eaten by another organism

7. hibernating-spending the winter months in a deep sleep to avoid the cold
climate, these animals live on fat that is stored in their bodies
