Why have class pets?
By handling and caring for our pets the children experience first hand the following State Standards:
Life Science
*Animals need air, water, food, living space and shelter.
*Identify that there are many environments that support different kinds of organisms.
*Explain why organisms can survive only in environments that meet their needs.
*Compare similarities and differences among individuals of the same kinds of animals.
*Explain that food is a basic need of plants and animals and that it is important because it is a source of energy.
*Investigate the different structures of animals that help them live in different environments (e.g., lungs, gills...)
Scientific Inquiry
*Use appropriate tools and simple equipment (such as magnifiers, thermometers, ...) to gather scientific data.
*Measure properties of objects using rulers, balances, and thermometers.
Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Standard
*Demonstrate skills and explain the benefits of cooperation when working in group settings;
   a)manage conflict peacefully, b)display courtesy, c)respect others.
*Demonstrate self-direction in tasks within the school community (classroom, cafeteria, and playground.)
