Our class had the opportunity to participate in Physiology Understanding Week (PhUn Week)! Dr. Bina Joe visited our classroom and taught our class about the science of how things work in your body (physiology). The children learned that the heart is only the size of a fist, yet it is the strongest muscle in the body. The children held models of the heart and learned the name of the 4 rooms in the heart: atria and ventricles.

Dr. Joe explained how blood rich with oxygen is pumped by the heart to all of the parts of the body. She taught the children that the 2 best ways to keep the heart healthy is healthy food and exercise!

Ø Snacks: The children may have a healthy snack during the school day. Please send in a healthy snack (preferably fruit or vegetables) for your child to eat. This is a great time to get in a serving from the fruit or vegetable group into your child’s diet. I will be encouraging children to try different healthy foods. Finger foods that are not too messy are best as we do not break for our snack, we work, work, work, and take a bite, work, work, work. (Carrots, celery, raisins, grapes, cucumber slices, bananas, apples… are best.) Please do not send in peanuts or peanut products as we do have children allergic to peanuts in our classroom.
Ø Movement: Children Need to Move! Movement benefits the whole child- physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Activities from Hands On: How to Use Brain Gym in the Classroom, Smart Moves, Why Learning is Not All in Your Head, and Tools for Teachers are incorporated into our day.
