  2. If you don't want us to help our child on homework papers, how can we help them?

What if I can't help my child on homework?

Please don't feel that you are not good in math....it's just our
math curriculum is set up differently than when you and I learned
math. We now have discussions about a concept within a story or
situation. Many times if you do not hear the story that goes
along with the lesson, you will not understand how to help your
child. I tell parents actually to NOT help their child on their
homework on the first attempt. Let them make mistakes. Mistakes
are OK!! They will learn from their mistakes, fix their mistakes
and can still earn 100% on their homework assignments.

If you don't want us to help our child on homework papers, how can we help them?

I do not want you to help on their 1st ATTEMPT, however please
help them review papers that have already been graded and marked
100%. See if they can retry those problems 2-3 days after we
discussed them in class. If they cannot get the correct answer 2-
3 days later, have them come to me AI or before school for help.

My tests are created right from the homework assignments. You
can create practice tests for your child and use their graded
homework assignments as an answer key.

Why is the homework worth only about 10% of the overall grade?

I let students fix all mistakes on homework papers. Even if they
miss 14 problems for example, I will help them find the mistakes
(or they can try to find their own mistakes) and when they fix
the mistakes and turn it back into me the next day...they get 100%

I look at homework as a learning experience..I don't want them to
stress about getting problems wrong when they are exposed to a
concept the first time. I want the student to try their best,
attempt EVERY problem, and learn from their mistakes. Since they
can get 100% on every homework paper (after fixing mistakes), I
only make homework 10% of their final grade.

Homework may not be worth much as a percentage, but it is CRUCIAL
to doing well on my tests!! IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT DO THEIR
HOMEWORK, THEY WILL NOT DO WELL ON TESTS!!!

Why are tests and quizzes worth 90% ?

I explained why homework was worth so little in terms of the
overall grade(they should get 100% homework grade). The
remaining percent has to come from the tests and quizzes. I NEVER
test a student on material that I didn't teach them, that they
didn't try on homework, or that hasn't been discussed in class!!
I have been known to actually put the EXACT same homework
question(s) on the test. If it is not the exact same....it will
be very, very, very, very, very, very similar to the homework
questions. If they try homework, fix mistakes made on homework,
and retry those problems 2-3 days after grading to make sure they
understand the homework, THEY SHOULD DO VERY WELL ON TESTS.
