Here's what we did in class-
  • Computer lab---went to scilinks with code scn-0741 and did the following---go to Burying Bodies on page 3 on the list of websites. Try putting the dead horse in different locations. Make a list of the locations that fossilize the horse. Off the burying bodies page (on the right) you will find links. Go to Making Fossils. Do the same thing--click the buttons and read to see if the animal becomes a fossils. Make a list of which buttons work. Back on the burying bodies page on the links on the right go to Sea Monsters Game. Play the game. Lastly, go back to the scilinks list of websites. Choose any one website (not burying bodies). Go to the site, read the material there and write a one-paragraph summary. Include the URL and an evaluation of the site.

  • Listed similarities and differences between our cupcakes and the real Earth
  • Received instruction on earth's interior
  • Learned how to make a scale model
  • Reviewed how to use Venn diagrams
  • Learned about careers in volcanology

Welcome back to school 8th grade!!!
 
Today we began a unit on the geology of the Earth. Here's what we did in class-
  • Reviewed location and use of the fire extinguisher
  • Went over safety rules on food, gum and wafting odors
  • Got books "Inside Earth"
  • Learned a note-taking strategy listing what I knew and what I learned (use this with your homework!)
  • Learned the differences between direct and indirect evidence
  • Made observations on closed containers and used indirect evidence to infer what they contained. Discussed ways that scientists use these processes.
  • Saw an introductory video clip on plate tectonics
  • Got the general instructions and rubric for our first project (Earth Model)
Here's what to do before Monday-
  • Read pages 6-13 in the book. Be sure to look at the illustrations and diagrams too.
  • Complete your note taking as you read. Remember to correct the top section which we did in class.
  • Start thinking a little bit about what you might want to use to construct your earth model.
  • Enjoy the weekend; see you on Monday.
