Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What clothes do students have to have for Physical Education?
All students need sports shoes, not worn outside. Clean is the main thing, they DO NOT have to be new. Fifth through 8th grade must change shirt, pants, and of course shoes.Back to Top
Do they have to change for class?
In grades 5-8 I do require the students change. I believe it is a health issue. They sit all day in wet clothes. They need to keep their clothes in their hall locker and change in locker room.Back to Top
What if my child is afraid to change in front of other people?
They need to talk to me and as long as they don't abuse it, they can change in the rest room near the main office.Back to Top
Each class has been developed as a unit. Each unit is given a 100 piont value. In grades 3-8 grades are based on a 90-80-70-60 scale A-F. K-2 are back this year to an O-S-N Outstanding, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement. Each student is assesed on skill development, participation, and attitude. If I could meet with each class more than two times per week (approx. 70-80 minutes per week) I would grade on mastery of skills. I can't do that in 36 classes so I've chosen to introduce the classes to the most activities and fitness skills possible so they might get a taste of what is available. Unfortunatly, it is up to them to follow through later in life. I am trying to give them a basic foundation.Back to Top
Do you take off points for not dressing for class?
NO! I don't believe that has anything to do with my classes grading. They ARE participating unless they have a medical excuse, even in socks and are sliding all over the floor, they may loose points for skills as they can't move and cut when necessary. Not dressing for class is tied however, to our school discipline plan. ( Not bringing materials to class). It carries over to the next class and will result after 5 times in an in-school suspension.Back to Top
How can I help with my childs' progress.
Ask to see your 4th-8th graders Activity Log. This is done 4 times a year and is a 100 point Unit Grade. (You'd be suprised how many kids don't do the assignment and get a "50" as a result. (That doesn't average very well). The average person should walk 10,000 steps a day (buy a pedometer about $8.00 at WalMart) if your child does not have at least 30-50 minutes of vigerous activity a day circled then..."Let no child be left on their behind" !!! Turn off the video games and take a power walk with them for 30-50 minutes. It will help you too and you'll be spending some quality time with your child! Talk to them during the walk. That is a way to gage your Perceived Exertion Level (PEL). If you can talk but it's a challenge to breath, then you are on or close to your target heart rate.Back to Top
What if my child is ill or has a medical problem?
Anything requiring you child to miss more than two days in a two week period requires a medical excuse from a doctor. They may be assigned a written report to make up for the physical aspect of the class missed.Back to Top
