Physical Education Syllabus 2008-2009 School Year

This year, my goal is for every student K-5 to work toward 30-40 minutes of
moderate physical activity per day. For students 6-8 they need to be moving
30-45 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous activity. Moderate activity
means you can hold a conversation with someone else, but your breathing is
harder when you try to talk. Vigorous activity is when you can't talk while
exercising.

I will once again semester one offer girls only class for 7th and 8th
graders. I have scheduled Thai Chi, Aerobics, Stability Ball Core
development training, light hand weights, personal safety training and
fitness training. I am currently trying to schedule a Yoga session (If you
know an instructor, call me), target heart rates and understanding
Perceived Exertion Levels (PEL).

Class Materials Requirements: 5th -8th grades are required to CHANGE clothes
for class. This includes; PANTS/SHORTS, SHIRT and SHOES (the shoes must be
non-marring and my not be street shoes). I also encourage
deodorant at this age. I don’t want students sitting in wet clothes all day.
Grades Kindergarten-4th are required to change SHOES. No street shoes are
permitted on the gym floor.

5th – 8th Advanced P.E./Fitness: (Must meet the class marerials requirement
every class)
Student signing up for the advanced P.E. track will be challenged with many
various types of conditioning and skill specific training. This is not a
traditional Physical Education Class. Students will incorporate nutrition,
target heart rates, weights, plyometrics and other various tools to enhance
their physical prowess. Emphasis in this class will be placed on the
development of the complete athlete. There will be some research work
involved in this class. There may also be written assignments. There will
not be as many opportunities to play the traditional games as in the regular
Physical Education Class. Entry in this program is by permit only. The
classes will be offered two days per week.

5th -8th Regular Physical Education: This is the traditional Physical
Education class. Emphasis will be placed on skill development by following a
skills rubric. Students will be challenged with specific levels of skill
development. There will be an emphasis on lifetime and recreational
activities. This class will be offered one day per week.

4th grade Physical Education: This level of Physical Education will be
geared toward the transition between motor skills and movement patterns and
skill development toward team sports and activities. There will be an
emphasis on team building, sportsmanship, and cooperation activities.

K-3rd Physical Education: For Kindergarten through third grade Physical
Education the emphasis is on loco-motor/manipulative skill development.
Students will learn how to move their bodies and developing the large
muscles of the body. Movement patterns, levels, styles of movement, body
control in space, fundamental hand eye coordination skills of throwing,
catching, kicking and striking are emphasized at this level.
