NEW ADDITIONS TO THE COLLECTION

ADULT FICTION & NON-FICTION

The 13th Hour
by Richard Doetsch
"If you could save her, would you?" That is the question a mysterious
stranger poses to Nick Quinn as he sits in the interrogation room,
accused of his wife's murder. A time-traveling watch would let him
repeat the last half of the day, not just reliving it but able to choose
new actions. Nothing is that simple and every change will have further
consequences - some for the better and some for the worse - in this
novel that begins with Chapter 12 and counts down backward, hour by
hour, to the 13th hour. Film rights already purchased.

How to Teach Physics to Your Dog
by Chad Orzel
One of the great things about dogs is that they are open to new ideas.
Quantum mechanics and chasing squirrels? Particle theory and dog treats?
No problem. Physics professor Chad Orzel explains it all to his dog,
Emmy, and in the process some of us humans might learn a few things as
well. Abstract science delivered painlessly.

The Lady in the Tower: The Final Days of Anne Boleyn
by Alison Weir
Poor Anne Boleyn. She was not familiar with the idea of "what goes
around, comes around", so when her conniving and treachery came back to
haunt her she was taken by surprise. After she was banished to the Tower
of London, her final days were fraught with even greater conniving and
treachery. Since publishing The Six Wives of Henry VIII in 1992,
historian Alison Weir has become an authority on the lives of the
endlessly fascinating Tudors of England.

A Matter of Class
by Mary Balogh
Her wreckless behavior means banishment to the far north of England, and
his merchant father wants something that the nouveau riche can't buy --
a titled name for his son and future generations. Reginald doesn't want
to give up his carefree bachelor life, but if funding his escapades
hinges on securing that coveted earldom, he might need to
reconsider...and marriage would squelch the rumors about Lady
Annabelle's reputation and keep her in good standing in the bon ton.
Hmm... it might just work.

True Confections
by Katharine Weber
Alice Tatnall Ziplinsky recalls her 33-year career working at the Zip's
Candy factory and her troubled marriage to owner Howard "Howie"
Ziplinsky. With tart wit and keen awareness, Alice describes her
struggle to fit into the Ziplinsky family. Alice's single life was not
without drama; during an adolescent fit she once burned down a
classmate's home and became known as the "Arson Girl." The Zip's Candy
Company is now in trouble and Alice is determined to tell her version of
this convoluted family history. Weber (Triangle, 2006) weaves a tale of
love, betrayal, and sweet family secrets.

Night Lights
by Susan Gal
An assortment of evening lights is described in this beautifully
illustrated picture book. A girl, her mother, and their dog spend a
pleasant evening as they bicycle home from shopping, roast hot dogs over
a grill on the porch, celebrate her birthday, run inside at the arrival
of a summer storm, and get ready for bed. This reassuring reflection of
a child's world makes a wonderful bedtime story, and would be sure to
soothe any lingering fears of the dark. A warm, friendly, shining debut
from a very talented new author-illustrator for ages 3-6

NEW STUFF FOR TEENS

Gateway
by Sharon Shinn
Like a lot of teens, Daiyu feels like she doesn't belong. Being a
Chinese adoptee in St. Louis, Daiyu often feels isolated. Looking for a
tangible connection to her heritage, Daiyu buys a black jade ring at a
street fair. But the ring is more than just a symbol of where she's
from; it is actually infused with magical powers, which transport Daiyu
into a version of St. Louis that resembles 19th century China. Soon
Daiyu is recruited as a spy, and she forms an attachment to Kalen, a
cute guy who is also part of the program. As she gets further into her
new life, Daiyu finds herself missing her old life more and more. If she
is able to return home, though, will that mean that Daiyu will never see
Kalen again? Readers who can't get enough of this involving fantasy will
be happy to know that it is the kick-off to a projected series.

Hush, Hush
by Becca Fitzpatrick
Unlike her best friend, Vee, Nora Grey has never really been attracted
to any guys at their high school. Nora spends her time working on the
school's e-zine, but when she gets a new, strikingly handsome science
lab partner, Patch, suddenly her own life becomes way more news-worthy.
Patch has an enigmatic smile, eyes you can get lost in, and a dangerous
way about him that seems to suggest he knows exactly what she is
thinking: a fact that Nora finds both thrilling and terrifying. Nora's
investigative skill kick in, and she decides to do a little research
into Patch's past. But when the clues seem to suggest that Patch's
appeal might even be outer-worldly, will Nora be frightened away from
him, or too fascinated to break things off? For fans of supernatural
romance, wondering what to read next, look no further.

The Indigo Notebook
by Laura Resau
Zeeta has enjoyed traveling the world with her mother, Layla, and living
in a different country every year. But while spending the summer in
Ecuador, Zeeta feels like she is ready to stay in one place. The only
problem is finding a way to get Layla to want to settle down. Zeeta
decides the best way to do this is to give her mother a reason to stay,
and she begins looking for a boyfriend for her mother. During her
search, Zeeta instead meets Wendell, a guy her own age. Wendell is an
American adoptee, but is back in his homeland, looking for his birth
parents. Zeeta agrees to help Wendell, and they track down his father.
When the man appears to be involved in some criminal activity, though,
will Zeeta's desire to get closer to Wendell put both teens in danger?
This is an affecting coming of age story.

Joe Rat
by Mark Barratt
Despite never being alone for long, Joe has discovered that life on the
streets of Victorian London can be a very lonely place. Not knowing who
his parents are, and not even knowing exactly how old he is (somewhere
in his teens, probably), Joe supports himself by scrounging the sewers,
looking for anything of value to sell to "Mother", the cruel woman who
controls the blighted area. When he impulsively rescues Bess, a young
woman on the verge on being sold into sexual slavery, both Joe and Bess
are forced to seek refuge in a house owned by a mysterious figure known
as "the Madman". Will this be the end, or just the beginning, for Joe
and Bess? The Kirkus review praises this novel's "gritty, flawed
characters, propulsive plot and brooding atmosphere", calling it "a
chilling mystery that will haunt readers long after the final page."

Legacy
by Thomas E. Sniegoski
Clayton Hartwell has never been a very big part of his son's life, so
when the now eighteen-year-old Lucas gets an urgent summons from him,
Lucas at first ignores him. Then Clayton tells his son two important
things; the first is that while his public identity is that of a
billionaire, he has a secret identity as a vigilante superhero, "The
Raptor". And his dad then reveals even more stunning news; he is dying,
and he wants Lucas to take over his role protecting the city. At first
Lucas refuses, but he relents after evil forces kill his mother. As
Lucas himself than prepares to try and assume the role of superhero, he
takes a closer look at his father's life, which raises all sorts of new
questions. Will Lucas be able to handle the answers? Like all compelling
fantasies, this one is boosted by equally involving characters.
