ADULT FICTION & NON-FICTION

Antiques Roadshow: Behind the Scenes
by Marsha Bemko
Have you sometimes wondered how they get those gigantic antique china
cabinets in to the Antiques Roadshow? Do the owners load their priceless
pieces onto little wagons and wait in line like everyone else? There
must be lots going on behind the scenes of the popular PBS appraisal
show, and this book promises to spill all of the secrets.

A Catered Birthday Party: A Mystery with Recipes
by Isis Crawford
Last seen in A Catered Halloween (2008), New York-based caterers Bernie
and Libby Simmons find their hands full when murder strikes a party
they're catering. Wealthy Annabel Colbert has asked the sisters to
arrange a luncheon to celebrate her pug, Trudy's, birthday. The party
has barely begun, however, when Annabel drinks a glass of poisoned wine
and dies two days later. The sleuthing sisters, with the help of their
ex-cop father, investigate a range of suspects, from Annabel's
philandering husband to Trudy's soon-to-be fired trainer. A deliciously
entertaining mystery.

New York
by Edward Rutherfurd
New York City's history is given sublime treatment in this sparkling
fictionalized saga from the author of The Rebels of Ireland (2006).
Rutherfurd takes the reader on a cultural, economic, and social tour of
New York City, encompassing such events as the Revolutionary War, the
Wall Street Crash of 1929, World War II, and the attacks on the World
Trade Center. Historical figures from George Washington to J.P. Morgan
to Fiorello La Guardia make memorable appearances in this wonderfully
vivid celebration of the Big Apple.

Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story
by Wally Lamb
Set in 1964 small-town Connecticut, Lamb's (The Hour I First Believed,
2008) seasonal tale is by turns poignant and hilarious. Ten-year-old
Felix Funicello (distant cousin of the famous Annette) has been asked to
take part in his school's annual holiday pageant. He's eager to
participate, especially as the pageant will also include Zhenya
Kabakova, a new student recently arrived from Russia who has all the
boys intrigued. Unfortunately for Felix, his plans for a starring role
in the play (and perhaps a little alone time with Zhenya) go gloriously
awry. An uproarious and nostalgic glimpse at Christmas past.

BOOKS FOR CHILDREN

Alphabeasties and Other Amazing Types
by Sharon Werner
From an alligator made of aaa's to a zebra made of zzz's, an alphabet of
animals is on parade, each cleverly composed of its initial letter in a
typeface that often suits the characteristics of that creature--a spiky
alligator, a shaggy sheep, etc. Fold-out pages allow for the impressive
height of the giraffe or the length of the alligator to be revealed.
Small boxes on the bottom and sides of the pages show how using a
different typeface for a particular letter makes it suitable for a
different purpose--a loopy "l" for a lasso as opposed to one that leans
or bends slightly for laziness. Spectacular enough to be shared again
and again. Ages 3-9

The Further Adventures of a Lucky Dog: Owney, U. S. Rail Mail Mascot
by Dirk Wales
One stormy night in 1887, a stray mutt wandered into the Albany, New
York Post Office looking for shelter. Taking pity on him, the employees
adopted the dog, giving him a home. Owney loved the mail, following it
everywhere. During his nine-year career, Owney traveled all over the
United States, logged over 143,000 miles on mail trains, traveled around
the world, was honored by the Postmaster General, and named the official
mascot of the Rail Mail Service. Capture the adventurous spirit of one
Lucky Dog! Ages 7-10

Moose on the Loose
by Kathy-Jo Wargin
What would you do with a moose on the loose? Would you chase him, or
race him, or stand up to face him? What would you do with a moose in
your yard? Or in your house? How about in your room? Or in your tub?
Would you give him two boats? Would you see if he floats? Colorful,
comic artwork highlights the hilarity that ensues when wildlife wanders
indoors. Ages 4-7

The Omnivore's Dilemma, Young Readers Edition: The Secrets Behind What
You Eat
by Michael Pollan
"What's for dinner?" seems like a simple question--until journalist and
supermarket detective Michael Pollan goes behind the scenes. From fast
food and big organic to small farms, this young readers' adaptation of
Pollan's famous food-chain exploration encourages kids to consider the
personal and global health implications of their food choices. It's
smart and compelling with updated facts, plenty of photos, graphs, and
visuals. Ages 10+

by Anke De Vries
Ben and his cuddly friend Raf are inseparable. Then one day, Raf
disappears. Ben looks everywhere, but Raf is not to be found--until a
postcard arrives in the mailbox. Postcard follows postcard as Raf
journeys through Africa. He meets tall pink flamingos, long-trunked
elephants, vine-swinging monkeys, and (best of all) giraffes! Will he
return to help celebrate Ben's birthday? Ages 5-8

NEW STUFF FOR TEENS

A Brief History of Montmaray
by Michelle Cooper
It is not much use being a princess when you are an orphan, and your
family's castle is falling down around you. That is what sixteen-year-
old Sophie FitzOsborne is discovering the hard way. The year is 1936,
and the place is the remote island kingdom of Montmaray, where, when she
is not trying to corral her boisterous younger sister, Sophie devotes
more time to her diary than she does to her studies. Sophie's older
cousin, Veronica, is the scholar in the family, and is compiling a
history of the Montmaravian people. It is the family's future that
suddenly becomes more interesting, however, as the changing political
climate coincides with a boatful of Nazi "historians" landing on the
kingdom's shores. Will Sophie and her family's defense of their kingdom
take their life stories in an exciting new direction? This mix of
history, adventure and romance makes for an enchanting page-turner.

Flash Burnout
by L.K. Madigan
Fifteen-year-old Blake's interests include: spending time with his
girlfriend, Shannon, training as a photographer, and hanging out with
his photography partner, Marissa. Blake is managing to balance the
different parts of his life, until the day he takes a picture of a
street person whom he thinks is a stranger. However, she is actually
Marissa's drug addict mother, and when Marissa sees the picture, she
realizes that this may be the chance to reconnect with her long-absent
mom. As Blake tries to help Marissa, Shannon tries to be an
understanding girlfriend. But she starts to suspect that Blake and
Marissa's bond is moving beyond friendship. Will Blake be able to sort
out his feelings for both girls? There are no easy choices, but several
appealing characters, in this affecting coming of age story.

Ice
by Sarah Beth Durst
This mesmerizing retelling of a classic fairy tale features a young
woman struggling to let go of a painful childhood, so that she can
embrace adulthood. Cassie has grown up hearing her mother's absence
explained by her grandmother, who has always told Cassie that her mother
made a deal with the polar bear king, who took her to the ends of the
earth. Cassie has long since stopped listening to this story, and as she
nears her eighteenth birthday, all Cassie is focused on is her
scientific studies at an Artic research station. Then, on her birthday,
Cassie has an encounter that changes everything. Cassie meets a polar
bear that not only speaks to her, but also tells her that her mother is
being held prisoner. The bear says he can help Cassie bring her mother
back, as long as Cassie agrees to become his bride. Can Cassie save her
mother, without losing herself?

Lips Touch: Three Times
by Laini Taylor , illustrated by Jim Di Bartolo
This National Book Award nominee highlights three stories where romance
and the supernatural are locked in a sometimes passionate, sometimes icy
embrace. The tale Goblin Fruit reveals just how far goblins are willing
to go to tempt today's savvy young women. In Spicy Little Curses, a
demon and the ambassador to Hell's battle for the soul of a beautiful
British girl is interrupted when, in the name of love, she decides to
test her curse. The focus of the final story, Hatchling, is Esme, whose
fourteenth birthday is marked by the fact that her left eye suddenly
changes from brown to blue. This is just the beginning of changes in
Esme's life, as a handsome, fanged man suddenly pursues her. If he
catches her, will that be the end for Esme, or just the beginning?
Halloween may be just past, but these stories cast an irresistible
spell.

Solace of the Road
by Siobhan Dowd
Holly Hogan thinks that if she could just make it back to Ireland, and
find her mom, then everything would be okay again. Holly's British
foster parents are nice to her, but after what Holly's gone through, she
knows better than to trust that the situation will last. Holly feels
like school is just another place where she doesn't fit in, and when it
all becomes too much, she takes off. As Holly makes her way through
England, to what she hopes is a happy future with her mother, Holly has
a chance to really think about her past. As she gets closer to a reunion
with her mom, Holly wonders if things will finally be different this
time. This bittersweet story beautifully illustrates a lonely teen's
struggle to belong.
