About Mrs. Poston

My name is Erika Poston and this is my 12th year teaching in Stow!  I
taught 4th grade at Echo Hills for eight years before coming to Woodland to teach 2nd grade.  I got my BS in Elementary Education from Ashland University in 1998.  At that time I also received my reading endorsement.  I have completed my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Literacy.  I love teaching and working with my students.
When not in school, I live in Wadsworth with my husband Brian and our three children.  Our son Kaleb is eight and will be entering third grade this year.  He LOVES sports and provides our family with many fun and busy nights attending his games.  Bailey, our oldest daughter, is 4 1/2 and is in pre-school.  She is a complete "girlie-girl" and is Mommy's shopping buddy.
Our youngest daughter, Peyton, turned two in May and is a very spirited little girl.  These three keep us busy and give me many stories to share with my students.  In my spare time, I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  I also enjoy taking pictures and creating digital scrapbooks.  We love watching sports in our house.  We are big fans of Ohio teams.  (For those of you who know Kaleb, you know that we  also  follow the Steelers because of him. )
I feel completely blessed to be working in the teaching field.  I have known my whole life that I wanted to be a teacher.  I always enjoyed school and helping children, so this career choice was an easy one for me.  I enjoy spending each and every day with your fabulous children and  look forward to working with them this year.  I am passionate about helping each one of my students find success!

My Philosophy
I feel very strongly that school should be a safe and fun place for children to come to learn every day.   I strive to achieve a feeling of warmth and respect amongst all class members in order for each child to have a feeling of safety so that they can be risk takers when learning.  I  appreciate each student for who he or she is and let them know that they are a valued member of our classroom community.  I truly care about my students and try to let them know that each day.
I am passionate about individualizing instruction when possible to help each child meet his or her goals and achieve the most success possible.  For this reason, I utilize many methods of instruction on a daily basis: group work, individual work, small group with the teacher, hands-on activities, pencil and paper activities, etc.  In my room, students often work on different tasks from their peers.  These tasks are different because they are geared for individual growth. I work very hard to get to know my students as individuals and adjust my teaching according to their interests and needs while at the same time, I am very aware of making sure I am including all of the important Ohio Content Standards for our grade level.
I push my students to do their best.  I have high expectations for all and drive the children to work hard.  My favorite quote  is, "Whatever you do, do it well."  I try to help my students adopt this philosophy in relation to their daily work.  The work they produce should be work they are proud of. I also believe that a child's success depends upon a strong connection between the teacher and parents.  For this reason, I am ALWAYS open to communication with families and highly encourage it.
I think that if learning is presented in fun, meaningful, and tangible ways in an environment that is safe and nurturing, students will be motivated to become life-long scholars.  I want them to be excited to learn and to LOVE second grade.    I am dedicated to making sure this happens for all of my students!
