What is the best way to get in touch with Mrs. Poston?

You are more than welcome to contact me whenever about whatever. I always
welcome parent communication because I know from my own personal experience,
children come home with many stories and explanations that just don't alway
add up. : ) Email is a fantastic way to get in touch with me. I know that
many parents communicate with me in this way, so I check my email frequently.
It is a fast and efficient way for me to answer your questions, comments, or
concerns. Phone calls are always welcome as well, but I am rarely able to
take calls during the day due to classroom instruction. If you need to call,
you are most likely to get ahold of me during the following times: 8:15-8:45,
11:45-12:25, 3:30-3:45, or during specials. (Check the class schedule for
specialist times.) You may also send notes into school, but be aware that
they don't always get delivered to me by the children.

What do I do about birthday snacks?

The children LOVE to celebrate birthdays!! For this reason, I highly encourage
birthday treats. Treats can be anything you want them to be. Some
recommendations are food items such as cookies, cupcakes, fruit, individually
wrapped snacks, etc. Don't be afraid to send non-food items in for a
healthier way to celebrate the occasion. Some non-food suggestions are
pencils, stickers, the child's favorite CD to play while we work, etc. I
typically celebrate birthdays right before lunch. We celebrate as a class,
but do not take time out of our learning. In other words, we eat while we
work. Parents often ask if they can come in to celebrate too. Because I am
so passionate about using the time we have for learning, I ask that parents
consider coming in for lunch instead of anticipating a classroom party for the
child. If you have any questions about this, don't be afraid to ask.

Are the students allowed to have snack during the day?

Yes, yes, yes!! I know that my 8 year old has a VERY hard time going from
breakfast to lunch without eating. Please feel free to send your child in
with a HEALTHY snack each day. We will eat these in the morning part of our
day. I do stress that the snacks need to be healthy. I do not allow the
children to eat high sugar or high fat foods during this time. Healthy
options are fruits, vegetables, pretzels, graham crackers, 100 calorie packs,
applesauce (send the utensils in too), Jell-O, unbuttered popcorn in a small
bag, etc. I try to have pretzels on hand for children that without a snack,
but the students should not count on me always having these available.

What about water bottles??

I have mixed feelings on water bottles. Because of the use of water bottles,
students have a greater need for bathroom use, which interrupts classroom
time. Also, with water bottles, we have many more spills for Mrs. Rack to
clean. For the first and last parts of our year, the water bottles are
definitely allowed by me. The rooms tend to get very hot in August/September
and May/June. The students need to stay hydrated during this time. When the
weather gets colder, I usually ask that the students not rely on the water
bottle as much. I will never deny them to be used in our classroom, but I
allow the students to get many drinks during the day. If you feel that your
child does not need a water bottle each and every day, then I would encourage
you to keep them at home. However, if you feel that it is essential for your
child to have one at school, I will be okay with them having it.
