In reading this week we utilized RIVET to learn our new vocabulary. We focused on our ROAR skill by utilizing context clues to decide the meaning of our new words. When reading Grandfather's Journey we practiced our QIA technique. QIA stands for question in answer and it is a way to answer questions more effectively. For example, in the question "why did grandfather travel to the New World?". Students would use the question in their answer by stating "Grandfather traveled to the New World because...". The QIA helps students communicate answers more clearly. We will continue to practice this skill when finishing the story next week.

Students did bring home their January reading responses. Please help them get back into the routine of reading four times each week and responding in their spiral notebook. Students need to use the QIA technique in all of their January responses. They must use details from the story in their answers also.

In math we began unit 7 on fractions. We reviewed fractional parts of shapes, but also fractional parts of groups. We worked on "fraction of" problems with Skittles. We also learned the quick way to solve these problems. For example, if you are trying to find out what 6/9 of 54 is you simply do the following. You divide the number by the bottom number 54/9=6. Then you multiply your answer by the top number 6 * 6 = 36. So our answer is 36. Some students still seemed a little unsure of these steps, so we will continue to practice.

This week students did bring home a multiplication and division page, which you will see at the beginning of each week. The page does not have to be turned in until Friday, but students can turn it in any time during the week. Also please don't forget the problems on the back.

Snow was our topic in writing and science this week. We completed a report this week on snowflakes. We reviewed how to use the facts given to write a report.

In science we enjoyed learning about the seven different types of snowflakes. We even had fun creating some of our own. We also explored the changing Earth. We enjoyed seeing some fast changes in class by watching our volcano and creating our own tornado. Our unit will end next week with a test probably on Thursday. Students already have a study guide in their INDIAN binder. This will be our last science grade for the nine weeks.

Students brought home a permission slip for our field trip in February to Columbus.  This is an overnight field trip and a wonderful opportunity for the students. We must send in the COSI money early for them to reserve our spots. Please try to get the permission slip and money turned in by the due date: Friday, January 16th.

Enjoy your weekend!
