What a great trip! I can't thank the students and parents enough for making this field trip so enjoyable. I hope the students enjoyed it! I will try to get pictures of the trip on the website this weekend. If any parents have pictures that they want to share, please feel free to email me them. Thanks again to Mr. McAtee, Mr. Dalton, Mr. Yeary, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Hatton, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Doyle, Mrs. Shanks, Mrs. Boy, Mrs. Caudill, Mrs. Caudill and Mr. Starkey. We couldn't have done it without you. I hope you are able to get some sleep tonight.
During math we continued working with fractions, decimals and percents. Students are doing an excellent job changing decimals and fractions to percents. The hardest part for us is finding sale prices. Students often want to multiply or divide the percent to find the discount. When finding discounts you want to change your percent to a fraction. These types of problems are very familiar to the students. For example, if there is a 40% sale on an item that costs $40. First we change our 40% to 2/5. Then the problem becomes what is 2/5 of $40. We have worked with these problems a lot. You always divide the bottom number then multiply the top number. 40/5=8 then 8*2=16 Finally, you have to subtract your discount from the original price. $40-$16=$24 The sale price would be $24. Again students need to know common fractions and their percent. They should study to learn that 1/2 is 50%, 1/4 is 25%, 3/4 is 75%, 1/5 is 20%, 2/5 is 40%, 3/5 is 60% and 4/5 is 80%. A test will be coming up shortly, but a study guide will come home first.
There's a new sheriff in class! Actually we have had some interesting visitors to our classroom this week including a sheriff. You'll need to ask your child for all the details. In social studies we began a government and economics unit. Students learned the three branches of government and the duty of each branch. They also learned who was at the local, state and national level for each branch.

Midterms came home on Wednesday along with the math and reading practice achievement tests! We only have four more weeks of the 3rd nine weeks. The nine weeks ends on Friday, March 27th. Thanks!

FYI: Next week is Right to Read Week. We will be visiting the bookfair on Monday. Don't forget to bring money to buy some books!

 Thanks!
