The plant unit concluded this week in science with a test on Thursday. Students should be bringing the test home on Monday, along with their current third nine week's science grade. The highlight of the week was becoming archaeologists and breaking some plaster to find some fossils. This was an experiment we started last week, but were finally able to complete. The class also brought home their rye guys. Many of them made predictions about how long their grass would continue to grow. Hopefully, they are doing a good job taking care of them at home. We know they need sunlight, water, nutrients and air.
Students have been reading about Thomas Edison this week. We discussed biographies and autobiographies with this story. The genre the class is reading is biography, because Edison did not write the book. It has been interesting learning about a young Thomas. This is a preview of our next social studies unit on Ohio inventors. Though Thomas spent most of his life in Michigan, Ohio still claims them as their own. He moved from Ohio as a child.
In math we quickly finished up Unit 11 so that we could include it on the third nine weeks. Much of the unit was review of concepts we were already familiar with, such as volume and three-dimensional objects. This test will be coming home on Monday also.
In language arts we wrote a response to the story
The Secret Shortcut
by Mark Teague. This was a group write and students did an excellent job of introducing and concluding their writing. This is often a weakness for the students. We continue to gear up for our Ohio Achievement test in writing.
Don't forget our field trip to Carillon Park is next Friday, April 3rd. We will be outside, so please dress for the weather. Also students need to bring a packed lunch for the trip.
Just a reminder that next week is the last week before spring break!
Enjoy!
