11/3 News

In reading we enjoyed another Encyclopedia Brown story. We read "The Case of the Disgusting Sneaker". We practiced writing answers with details from the selection. We also used our QIA strategy. All answers should include words from the question. We reviewed vocabulary skills, similes, metaphors and idioms also. We will take our quiz over the story next week.

Students now have their November home reading sheets in their INDIAN binder. November's responses are a little less time consuming so they should focus on more reading. Please encourage your child to keep up with their reading.

In math we continued our decimal unit. We reviewed comparing, adding, and subtracting decimal numbers. Then we began learning about metric measurements. This was a hard concept for students, so I strongly encourage you to review with your child for the test next Tuesday. On the study guide there are examples of how to change millimeters, centimeters, and meters. They need to memorize that 10 mm = 1 cm, 100 cm = 1 m and 1000 mm = 1 m.
In social studies we are learning about the last prehistoric Indians and the groups of historic Indians that have lived in Ohio. The Mound builders were the last group of prehistoric Indians, which means we have no written history of these groups. The historic Indians are different because we do have written history about the Shawnee, Mingo, Delaware, Wyandot, Miami and Ottawa. The French and British that traveled to Ohio wrote about these Native American groups, so they are historic Indians. Students will be working cooperatively to share information about each group that lived in Ohio. Then the groups will be presenting information about their tribes. Students now have a study guide about the Mound Builders and Native American groups in their INDIAN binder. Their test will be next week.
Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me last night at conferences. I hope you enjoyed your visit and learned more about your child's school habits. I look forward to seeing the rest of you next Tuesday. If you are unsure of your conference time, you may refer to the schedule at the link to the left.

Report cards are coming home today for those of you that did not receive them last night. You may keep the report card, but I do need the envelope returned. Please sign the front on the 1st nine weeks line and return as soon as possible. If you have any questions about grades, please don't hesitate to email me at the link above or write a note. Thanks so much!

Enjoy your weekend!
