1/12 News

In reading we finished Grandfather's Journey with a quiz. Then we began our focus on immigration with the story, If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island. This story connects with the social studies unit we will be starting soon. Students are learning lots of interesting facts about the immigrants that traveled to America. They are learning about their difficult journey and the struggles they encountered at Ellis Island. We will finish reading this story next week.
In math we continued our fraction unit, which is a rather large unit. We worked on comparing fractions. This is difficult for some students because it is opposite of what they usually think about numbers. The bigger the bottom number means it is actually a smaller fractional part. For example, 1/100 is actually cutting something into 100 little pieces. This is a much smaller fraction than 1/8 or 1/25. We worked on finding equivalent fractions, which is simple when you multiply by Mr. One. You can ask your child all about Mr. One. Students will be bringing home study guides sometime next week for the unit test.

We concluded our Earth changing processes unit with a test today. Students enjoyed the many hands-on experiments. They learned quite a lot also. We will be working with science technology after our social studies unit over immigration.

During language arts students wrote an outside narrative. They did an exceptional job on these. They seem to be doing a much better job of sequencing their narratives. I also see them utilizing better transitions between sentences and paragraphs. We will continue to develop these skills.
