1/19 News

Our week began with our quiz over If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island , the nonfiction story that we read last week. We began new nonfiction stories about a variety of topics this week. We once again practiced our QIA (Question In Answer) strategy. We also focused on details in our answer. I noticed in our reading responses we often don't use details from the story for support. We practiced this together and discussed what details you can use for support. Hopefully this will improve our written answers.

Continue to monitor that home reading. Quite a few students are not caught up on the January reading and will have to read this weekend. Next week the calendar will be due.

In math we continued working hard on fractions. We explored probability, which can be shown as a fraction. We tested probability with an experiment in class. Our results didn't turn out quite as we expected. Students had a test over this unit today.

Some of us are still forgetting our multiplication and division page that is due Friday. Also parents may check over the work with a calculator. Many students are making errors in their multiplication, which affect the whole problem. If you choose to check the page, please have your child find their mistake. Please help create a routine for your child so they can learn homework responsibility.

Our immigration unit began with the students planning their journey to the New World. We met with our families and mapped our trip. This helped us review our map skills. Finally, we started the journey and learned a little more about our family's trip. Students will continue their journey next week.
In language arts we worked together on a response to text. We focused on our introductions to this type of writing. We need to be clear about our purpose for writing. The students enjoyed reading A Bad Case of the Stripes, which was the story we wrote about. We ended the week practicing our letter writing with our "Go Home" journal letter. Please don't forget to write back to us this weekend. Thanks!

Report cards came home today! Please remember to sign the envelope and return on Monday.

Enjoy your weekend!
