9/2 News

We read June 29, 1999 this week in reading. We reviewed cause and effect. We try to remember that cause is the WHY and the effect is WHAT HAPPENED. We also reviewed synonyms and antonyms with a fun RIVET game. Every day we worked on the steps to answer questions, which is something we will review all year long.

We are really getting a late start on our home reading this year, so it won't be coming home until late next week. Even though there isn't a huge time change we are still not completely in our daily routine. We always begin our home reading at school to learn how to record our responses. Hopefully, we will get to this early next week. Students will not have home reading until the notebook comes home. You may want to watch for that next week.

In math we continued working on our geometry unit. Students have a study guide in their INDIAN binder in the homework helpers section. Please do not take pages out of the clear protectors in their INDIAN binder. These need to stay in the binder. We will empty the clear protectors out in class. You may empty pages out of the homework folder and the parent communication pocket in the binder, but that is on the only places. Our unit math test will be next Tuesday. We defined polygons and worked with lots of types of polygons. Students explored with compasses also, but they will not be tested over that. Our next unit of study will be place value and data analysis.

We continued our weather unit in science with some air experiments. We explored the properties of air and were amazed we could keep water in a bottle with a hole in the bottom. This led up to our discussion about air pressure. The class will be exploring air pressure next week. We observed the wind again and we also graphed the temperature. This preparation is leading up to our daily weather forecasting.

Our writing focus was nouns and verbs. We wrote about a variety of topics in our journal and then searched for the nouns and verbs in our writing. We really struggled with linking verbs, so we will continue to practice them. In language arts we complete a daily language review page each morning, which we go over together. At the beginning of each week we have a DLR quiz, which is included in their grade. This is a review of the skills we worked on all week. The first graded quiz is coming home today. If students are not happy with their grade, they may always correct pages and send them in the next school day. I do give 1/2 credit for any corrected answers, but only if it comes in the next school day.

The students "Go Home Journal" is coming home today. In the parent communication pocket there is a letter explaining the procedure. Parents do have homework this weekend. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me this weekend.

Scholastic books orders came home this week. If you interested in ordering books please send them in before next Friday, September 12th. You may send a check made out to Scholastic Books to school with your order. I also have a link to the left where you can order online. You may use your credit card to place online orders. The books will come in with the class order. If you have any questions let me know.

Thank you!
