9/29 News

In reading this week we finished Stone Fox. We had very mixed feelings about the ending. Students enjoyed the fact that Willy won the race, but it was at a high cost to him. I was most impressed with the students' responses on their quizzes that came home earlier this week. They continued the story and they had some great ideas. I really enjoyed reading about how they would pay tribute to Searchlight. These quizzes were quite an improvement for some of us also.

In ROAR this week we reviewed antonyms and synonyms. We practiced with our Charlotte's Web reading this week. Every Friday we have a short assessment over the ROAR skill that was focused on that week. These assessments will be shared with you at parent conferences.

October reading calendars came home today, if any students want to get started for the month. The responses change each month, so please do not do summaries. The students have directions in their INDIAN binder.

In math we have begun Unit 3 over multiplication. Students are still working on their addition and subtraction timed tests, but our math lessons will be focusing on multiplication. We learned that there are basically only 21 facts that must be memorized. We have fact triangles to practice them in class. I would encourage the students to work on them at home also. Students will be working with number sentences and parenthesis with this unit also. A study guide for the unit will come home sometime next week.

Finally, we got to read our Fish Fuzzies from the month. Each student got their fish cup that had all their compliments for the month. We enjoyed Goldfish while we read all the nice things people had to say about us. We continue to practice our FISH philosophy by trying to make many people's day. If you are interested in learning more about the philosophy visit the Fish website by clicking on the Fish at the end of the newsletter.

We also finished our fall narrative. A narrative is simply a story. We completed a story map or brainstorming sheet this week and completed our narratives. Students reviewed how to edit and revise their work also. These grades are coming home today.

Students began their first unit in Social Studies over maps and the Early Ohioans. We worked hard with map skills. Our first focus was finding landforms, states and bodies of water in relation to Ohio. We created two maps to help us remember these, which are in their homework helpers section of their INDIAN binder. These will be helpful when studying for the unit test. The test will be next Thursday.

Students are bringing home their midterms today! Please take the time to read over these. I included a print out of their grades and some students were confused about these. The orange highlighted grades are the current grades. The ones highlighted in yellow are the graded areas that are averaged together to get the overall orange grade. Also some of these grades have changed already. I grade papers and input grades on a daily basis. The best way to know your child's current grade is to check the online gradebook, Progressbook. There is a link to the left to access those grades. Please do let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the midterms. Also please sign the pink slip and return on Monday. Thanks!

Enjoy your weekend!
