11/10 News

In math we began our multiplication unit. In this unit we learn many different ways to multiply. Though I introduce different ways and students are required to practice all the methods, they may use the method they are most comfortable with for tests. Some of these methods may be new to you also, so please don't get frustrated with homework. I expect all students to attempt their homework, but don't get to the frustration level. No math homework is worth a meltdown. All students will be bringing home multiplication charts soon. For all multiplication homework I want them to utilize their charts, unless they have already passed their multiplication timed tests. It is important that they are focusing on the steps to multiply and not worrying about the facts. Some of us have learned the facts incorrectly also and I don't want them reinforcing those incorrect answers.
We will soon be concluding our Early Ohioans unit with presentations on the various Native Americans that lived in Ohio. Students have been working in groups all week to prepare for these. Their test over this unit will be next Tuesday. There is already a study guide in their INDIAN binder.

In reading some of us read how the word frindle was invented. A frindle is a pen. We are continuing to practice all of our reading skills with the story. Our written response answers are improving, but we will continue to practice these. Answers must begin with words from the question and have at least two details from the story.

Some students are reading The Landry News since they have already read the other story. They have learned about Cara who publishes her own newspaper and makes a teacher very anger with her first edition. We will be discussing the freedom of the press and other constitutional issues with this story. All students will finish these stories next week with a quiz.

All of us have completed our thank you letters. I hope your friends and family enjoy getting their mail. The students did a nice job of thanking people for all they do for them.

Thank you to all the parents who came to conferences to discuss their child's progress this year. I feel I have a better understanding of the students and hopefully answered any questions and concerns you had. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions or issues throughout the year.

Have a great weekend!

Parents need to fill a child's bucket of self-esteem so high that the rest of the world can't poke enough holes to drain it dry.
