5/11 News

Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate with us for field day, so we have to reschedule! Our field day will now be on Tuesday, May 19th. You are welcome to join us that day! Students should dress for the weather and bring a lunch that day!

In reading we read about the animal kingdom, which helps with our study of biomes next year. Students learned the different groups of vertebrates and invertebrates. We worked a lot on vocabulary and discussed prefixes and suffixes. Students were able to be very creative with this story. We began by creating fact or fib cards to share with the class. We used these in a game about the invertebrates. Then the students created poems that they will be acting out to share what they learned about the vertebrates.

In math we are beginning a unit over problem solving skills. We work on all the math processes with these skills. Don't forget that mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is vital to success in 5th grade math. Keep working on those facts! Each day we review a problem solving skills, which includes using a chart or graph, drawing a picture, guessing and checking, working backwards, and logic problems. We will have a test over all the skills in about two weeks.

In social studies we continued our last unit on Ohio pioneers. We became a pioneer family and planned our journey to Ohio. We are writing in a journal about our experiences with our family. This unit will end with our pioneer day.

Also don't forget our next state test is next Friday, which covers the Midwest Region. I added some links to help you prepare for these tests and learn the capitals if you want some extra credit. Thanks to Mrs. Hatton for letting us know about these resources! Thanks for your help in preparing your child for these tests also.

In writing we are beginning our achievement narratives about 4th grade. We will be making a fourth grade book and this will be one of the narratives that will be included. We also finally completed our rainforest reports. It took quite some time, but everyone did get it completed.

Please don't forget a packed lunch for Wednesday. We will be visiting Germantown Nature Center that day. Also dress for the weather we will be outside all day! Thanks!

Thanks!
Mrs. Stratton
