It was achievement practice test week! All 4th grade students took the reading, math, and writing practice tests! Hopefully, students see how important the testing tips are by taking these practice tests. Many students make silly mistakes on these tests and our hope is that they learn from these mistakes. The tests take approximately two and a half hours, so there is plenty of time to check over their work. Students often want to rush and we are really working on slowing down and reading everything, including directions, carefully. We will be reviewing these tests to correct any misunderstandings in the next few weeks. The actual testing will begin the week of April 20th, so we are gearing up for the big week! The Ohio Department of Education has an informative website about the achievement tests at the following link: Achievement Tests

The January reading calendar and response notebooks were due today. If for some reason your child did not turn them in, please make sure they bring them on Monday. Students already have their February response sheet. Students also brought home the "Required Two" list, which is in with their monthly reading sheets at the back of their INDIAN binder. Students must choose one book from the list to read this nine weeks. Then the last nine weeks they must choose another book. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

In math students worked on perimeter and area. Perimeter is distance around an object. We add all sides of the object and the "t" in the word perimeter helps us remember to add. Area is the space inside of an object. We can either count the boxes inside the object or if it is a rectangle we can multiply length times width. We will continue working on this unit next week with a test at the end of the week. Please remember that there are study guides in their INDIAN binder to help them study.

Our immigration unit concluded this week with some families being detained at Ellis Island. Some of the immigrants had to go through the inspection questions and did not fair so well. Our first class immigrants had no difficulties entering the country and didn't even have to go to Ellis Island. We reviewed map skills this week and some of us struggled with map scales. We worked on this together. Finally, we took a short quiz over all that we learned about immigration.
In language arts we read short stories and poetry. Students wrote responses to these texts. We discussed the difference between this type of writing and that of narratives and reports. The writing still must have a beginning, middle and end. It does not mean that students must have three paragraphs, but the paragraph must have a beginning, middle and end. Students wrote a response to a poem for a grade, which came home earlier this week.

Valentine's Day is next Saturday and we will be having a small celebration next Friday. Students may bring cards and a drink for the afternoon if they choose. I sent a list of students' names home this week. If your child is bringing cards, please make sure they have one for every student in the class.

Also the school student council is selling singing Valentine's next Monday and Tuesday. The cost is $1.00. If you would like to send your child a surprise Valentine please send $1.00 in an envelope with my name on it by Tuesday. I need to know who it is from. You can leave it as ? or from someone special if you don't want them to know. I also need to know the song you would like for your child. The choices are:  "You Are My Sunshine", "LOVE", "Lean On Me", and "FUN". These must be received by Tuesday morning.
