2/17 News

In reading we continued reading The War with Grandpa. We focused on what good readers do when they read. We worked on inferring, which is when you utilize clues or hints (DETAILS) from the story to make judgments, draw conclusions and make predictions. The students worked really hard on QIA during our ROAR lessons. Hopefully, this will carry over in all their reading work.

Don't forget that February reading calendars are due next week. Students should have read and responded fourteen times this month. You may want to check your child's reading notebook this weekend to see what they have left to complete.

In math we began our next unit on fractions, percents and decimals. Students must learn the common fractions and percents. They are 1/4=25%, 3/4=75%, 1/2=50%, 1/5=20%, 2/5=40%, 3/5=60%, 4/5=80%, 1/10=10%, 2/10=20%, 3/10=30%, 4/10=40%, 6/10=60%, 7/10=70%, 8/10=80% and 9/10=90%. Students should be able to figure these out, however, remembering fourths are always 25, fifths are always 20, and tenths you just add a zero may help them. Fractions can be easily changed to decimals and percents and students practiced this in class. We will continue this unit next week and have a test the following week.

In social studies we are learning about government in preparation for our Ohio Statehouse visit next week. We read about the city and state government. Students are learning about the three branches of government, their duties and who fulfills those roles. Hopefully, this will allow us to ask some good questions during our tour.

Students worked on a response to a story this week. Our focus was on reading and following directions. Some of us have trouble slowing down and reading carefully about what we are supposed to be writing. Students also practiced writing a topic sentence. Our writing should always have an introduction, so the reader knows what they are reading. Another issue is handwriting. Many of us are using capital letters in our writing in the middle of words. We really focused on this while we wrote, as well as, working on spacing. Hopefully, we will see some improvement in our writing with this work.

Just a reminder that our field trip to Columbus is scheduled for next week! More information is coming home today about the trip! Be sure to check your child's INDIAN binder.

Thanks!
