3/2 News

In reading this week we focused again on nonfiction stories. We learned about a plant's struggle and how animals migrate. I was quite impressed with the students' effort in deciding main ideas. This was an area of weakness for the class overall on the practice achievement test. They really worked hard and I was impressed with their growth. We also worked on Venn diagrams and cause and effect with our stories. I have included lots of reading grades this week, so you may want to check your child's grades online. Also I forgot to check reading notebooks this week. Please make sure your child has started their March reading. They should have read and responded four times by Sunday. Thanks for all your support!
In math we completed the fractions, decimals and percents unit. Our test was Thursday. The test grades are coming home today. Students need to continue to practice those facts. We worked on multiplication and division of decimals in this unit. Some students are really slowed down, because they don't know those facts. Remember that 100% mastery is expected for 5th grade success this includes addition, subtraction and multiplication.
Our social studies unit will conclude early next week. The test will be next Tuesday. Students learned about government and economics. Our focus was on Ohio's economy. We discussed what businesses and products were made in Ohio. This brought up the discussion about imports and exports. Students brainstormed reasons why Ohioans imported goods. Students understood why we needed some goods. The goods simply were not able to be produced here, but were a little confused about the job market. They couldn't quite understand why other country's workers were paid so low. It was quite an interesting discussion. At the end of next week we will begin our next science unit, plants.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!
