3/16 News

Nonfiction stories were our focus again this week. We worked on main idea, details, cause and effect with these stories. We learned about a variety of animals in our reading. Students had to decide with their table, which book they wanted to read. Today students got to read the other stories during independent reading.

Don't forget we only have one more week of the nine weeks and I am hoping to get March calendars completed by Friday, March 27th. If all students are able to turn them in by Friday I can add them to the third nine weeks grade.

In math we completed Unit 10 this week with a test on Tuesday. Students should have brought the test home already. I  know some students brought them back corrected, but I haven't gotten a chance to regrade them. Hopefully, I will have them completed on Monday. Also these tests came home with the student's math grade listed at the top. Remember there is only one more week in the third nine weeks. We did begin our next unit on volume, weight and more about positive and negative numbers. We may be able to finish it up by next Friday with our unit test. This would be one more test grade for the students. A study guide for this unit will come home Monday.
Students are busily preparing for our writing achievement test coming up. We have really tried to write all of our four types of writing each week. Fourth grade students must be able to write a narrative, an informational report, a letter and a response to story. There have been some moans about the amount of writing we are doing now, but I have really seen some improvement in their writing. The graded writing this week was a thank you letter, which was the prompt from last year's test. Students will be bringing these home early next week.
Plants were our focus in science again. We should be finishing up this unit next week with a test on Wednesday. Students are bringing home a study guide today. It has been a busy week of experiments. Our rye guys continue to grow hair. We also explored the different types of seed from inside to out. The students experimented with seed dispersal; we observed the function of the stem with our colored carnations and began a plant fossil experiment. We have been busy exploring our world!

Have a great spring weekend!
