3/30 News

In language arts we finished up our biography of Thomas Edison. We watched a short video and compared the information we learned from both. Most of us agreed that books give us lots more details about a person's life. We also discussed some conflicting information and how we decide who to believe. It was an interesting discussion.

We began reviewing more for the achievement tests, which are right around the corner when we return from spring break. Please take some time to look over the April calendar to see your child's review schedule. Also there is some very important information on the back of the calendar in the March newsletter. These are in your child's INDIAN binder.

When students return from break, they will be bringing home a reading homework packet. Each night they will be responsible for reading and answering questions. Please do not go ahead of the schedule that is attached to the front. The time can be used for their home reading. It will be explained to the students, but I wanted you to know this also. You can simply log in the story they read and their time. They do not have to complete responses that week. Each day their packet will be checked and this will count toward a response. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.

Students are in full review mode in math. We began unit 12 about rate, but will take a break from the unit when we return to allow for more review of previously taught math concepts. Students must be familiar with all of our math skills, so we will be reviewing lots of skills. Take some time over break to look over the review sheet sent home.
In language arts we began the week by using what we learned in our biography of Thomas Edison to write an informational report. We reviewed the steps we take in writing a report. We also wrote a narrative about school for a grade. These grades will be posted over break and students will bring them home when we return.
Ohio inventors are our focus in social studies. Carillon Park was a great opportunity to get to know some local inventors like Orville and Wilbur Wright and Charles Kettering. Students are researching various Ohio inventors in the computer lab. Then they are creating PowerPoints to share the knowledge with the class. I am so impressed with their PowerPoint skills. They are really becoming quite proficient with the program. I look forward to seeing their results when we return.
Despite the rainy cold weather our trip to Carillon Park was great! The students learned lots of information and got to experience a schoolhouse in 1896. I will try to get some pictures posted over break.
