Beginning this week, we will be quizzing the students every Friday on math vocabulary. (See homework page for the current list of words.) The vocabulary words will come home on Monday for that Friday’s quiz. On short weeks we will have the quiz on Thursdays. Please study these words with your child weekly. Understanding the math vocabulary is a crucial part of understanding the directions and word problems in their math assignments. The quiz will be a matching or fill in the blank format (word bank provided). ****************************************************************************** Spanish homework and tests are listed on the Spanish page. Please check that web page for more information about all tests and homework for second grade Spanish. ****************************************************************************** Please do not send project/reports in early. We don't have a place to store them and they often get damaged if they are here early. Thank you for your cooperation. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Beginning October 12 we will be starting math timed tests with the second grade. The tests are posted on our web site for you to copy and practice with your student at home (see the time test page). This year we will be doing timed tests differently than we have done in the past. We will be testing the students three times a week. The first half of the test will be given to them on Monday. They will have 3 minutes to complete it. The second half of the test will be given to them on Wednesday. They will also have three minutes to complete the second half. On Friday, they will be given the entire test to complete in six minutes. The tests on Monday and Wednesday will be practice tests for the students. The test on Friday will be graded and the grade will be entered into our grade books. The students will be given a percentage grade for how many problems they complete accurately in the time allotted. Each test will be worth 10 points. Then the next week everyone, regardless of how well they did on the first test, will be moving on to the next test. That test will be given in the same manner as the first (the first half on Monday, the second half on Wednesday, and the whole test on Friday for a grade). We will continue each week with a new test until the Christmas break. There will be 4 addition tests, and four subtraction tests. Following Christmas break we will have a two week review in the same manner with one addition test on all of the facts (+6, +7, +8, and +9) and one subtraction test with all of the facts (-6, -7, -8, and -9). ****************************************************************************** If you are interested in some additional work for math, there is a math at home section that you can access through the math textbook website. We tried printing this information out for you to have a hard copy but unfortunately the copier was unable to pick up the colors used by the textbook manufacturer. There are a couple of pages for each unit. Vocabulary words and sample problems are supplied. Please check it out to help your student study for upcoming tests. When possible, we will post the dates for these upcoming tests on our second grade web site. Houghton-Mifflin Math Textbook web site: http://www.eduplace.com/math/mw/g_2.html +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In order to help keep our students healthy and the school free of bacteria, we are asking that you send in Clorox Wipes so that we can wipe down the desks daily. ****************************************************************************** Please keep the math pages that come home daily to study for our tests. The students tear the pages out of their books to complete and then put them in their blue folders to go home. There is no reason to take the math book home because the math pages left in the book are skills we haven't learned yet and will go home to be studied after we have learned the skills in class. ******************************************************************************
