Advanced Photography Class SyllabusAdvanced Photography Mr. LaFortune Fall 2009 Syllabus - Page 1 Course Description This course continues and expands the base of black and white photography covered in the Beginning Photography course. The course will explore the areas of (but is not limited to): alternative processes, the Zone System, archival printing techniques, large format photography, light painting, digital photography, image manipulation, night photography, documentary projects, and portfolio development. Each student will create a portfolio of fine art prints and will also participate in a class exhibit that will be displayed in the PAC Lobby. Class size: 6 - 8 students - (8 students maximum). Schedule This course is a single semester class and is an elective for juniors and seniors. This class meets during 6th hour Monday through Friday. Prerequisite: Beginning Photography and instructor approval. Textbook There is no textbook for this course, but handouts on any pertinent subjects will be provided. Materials 1 manual 1 folder for class handouts Procedure The primary format of this course will be daily participation and interaction. Students will work independently and sometimes cooperatively in small groups to complete their photography projects. Grading Policy Grades in this course will be based upon completion of photography projects according to the following criteria: • Class participation in discussions and project assignments - 20% • Film exposure and development - 20% • Image quality: cropping, composition, subject matter fits project - 20% • Print quality (contrast, print exposure, etc.) of completed project - 20% • Completion of project by deadline - 20% Grading Scale: 90 - 100% = A 80 - 89% = B 70 - 79% = C 60 - 69% = D 0 - 59% = F Advanced Photography Class Schedule 2009 – 2010
Week 1 Introduction to class. Project #1 – Using “Creative” Cameras project begins. Begin construction of self-assembly large format cameras. Week 2 Project #1 film due. Develop film & print contact sheets. Printing Project #1. Week 3 Project #2 – Digital Photography begins. Select Documentary Project. Week 4 Project #2 images due on CD or Week 5 Introduction to large format photography (4x5 and 8x10 cameras) and the Zone System. Project #3 – Large Format Photography begins. Critique Sessions. Week 6 Project #3 film due. Develop film & print contact sheets. Printing Project #3. Students’ work ready to display. Week 7 Project #4 – Photographer’s Choice begins. Archival Printing Techniques begins. Mini-project: Week 8 Project #4 film due. Develop film & print contact sheets. Printing Project # 4. Week 9 Handtinting photographs. Toning photographs.
