CATHOLIC APOLOGETICS SYLLABUS

CASCIA HALL SCHOOL - SENIOR SEMINAR - 2ND QUARTER

M,W,Th,F 8:15-9:00 AM Tuesdays 8:50-9:35 AM

Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” (1 Peter 3:15 RSV).

Course Description:

In this course students examine the nature of apologetics and the ways in which

apologetics is used to deal with the principal facts of Christianity, and God’s self disclosure and His revelation transmitted in the Church to believers in the contemporary world.

The scope of study will examine the apologetic reasons to answer, account for, and defend aspects of the Catholic Christian faith tradition.

We will examine the theological, philosophical, historical and biblical reasons for a variety of Catholic Christian teachings, beliefs and practices.

Course Texts:

Kreeft, Peter and Tacelli, Ronald, Handbook of Christian Apologetics: Hundreds of Answers to Crucial Questions

Bible (You may bring the translation and/or version of your choice. I will primarily be using the Revised Standard Version in class.)

Desired Outcome at the conclusion of this course:

Students should…

1. know the key arguments used to support and to challenge the Catholic Christian faith;

2. be able to articulate the main elements of Church teaching about these arguments;

3. be able to express their positions in a clear, concise, cogent manner, keeping in mind the words from Peter’s first epistle,

“…yet do it with gentleness and reverence .”

And from Titus 1:9-10 “…he must hold firm to the sure word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to confute those who contradict it, for there are many insubordinate men, empty talkers and deceivers.”

Grading:

There will be only two types of grades in this class: Quizzes and Tests

Quizzes will primarily be over the readings from the Bible and the Kreeft text.

Tests will primarily be from the lecture notes but may be based on a combination of lecture notes, handouts and the course texts.

All quizzes and tests are worth 100 PERCENTAGE points HOWEVER the average of your tests are worth 2/3 of your overall grade and the average of your quizzes are worth 1/3 of your overall grade.
