Fri 21 Aug:        Introduction letter and syllabus slip due.  Quiz: The Book Thief.

 

Week 2: Narration

Mon 24 Aug:     Preview vocab 1.  Review five-paragraph essay format and begin discussing narration in Patterns.

Tue 25 Aug:      Computer lab: Cascia email and turnitin.com.  Time permitting, begin reading in Patterns.

Wed 26 Aug:     Vocab 1 extra credit dueDiscuss “Only Daughter” (Patterns 84) and “Finishing School” (Patterns 89).

Thu 27 Aug:      Discuss “Shooting an Elephant” (Patterns 117).

Fri 28 Aug:        Vocab quiz 1HW: Brainstorm at least three stories or memories from your childhood that reflect a character trait you still possess today.

 

Week 3: Narration

Mon 31 Aug:     Begin drafting narrative essay: Story/Memory.

Tue 1 Sep:        Discuss “My Mother Never Worked” (Patterns 96) and “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder” (Patterns 101).

Wed 2 Sep:        Continue drafting narrative essay: Story/MemoryàEssay.

Thu 3 Sep:        Computer lab: Type narrative essay draft.

Fri 4 Sep:          Timed write 1.

 

Week 4: The Catcher in the Rye

Mon 7 Sep:        No classes: Labor Day.

Tue 8 Sep:        Rough draft of narrative essay due (hard copy and turnitin.com).  Preview vocab 2.  Intro to Catcher.

Wed 9 Sep:        Vocab 2 extra credit due.  Time to read Catcher.

Thu 10 Sep:      Watch video on J. D. Salinger.

Fri 11 Sep:        Vocab quiz 2.  Discuss Catcher 1-52.

Wed 7 Oct:        Discuss Patterns 169-80 ("The Way to Rainy Mountain" and "Once More to the Lake").

Thu 8 Oct:         Description exercise (long DWJW).

Fri 9 Oct:           Timed write review.  HW: Find a piece of descriptive writing that you think is particularly good or particularly bad.  Either email it to me by 8:00 a.m. Monday or bring it to class.  Be prepared to discuss it.

 

Week 9:

Mon 12 Oct:      Discuss homework assignment.  HW: Write at least one descriptive essay assignment.

Tue 13 Oct:       DWJW due.  Discuss homework assignment.
