Why do I have to take art?

In 1990, the state of Oklahoma mandated that the visual arts would be CORE
curriculum in secondary education. Statistical research has shown that those
students provided with the study of the arts (visual art, music and drama)
score significantly higher on standardized test; are poised and self-
confident; are more likely to attend school; develop higher-order thinking
skills; and, are more likely to pursue higher education.

Why do I have to study all these vocabulary terms?

The Oklahoma State Department of Education has published a vocabulary list
of art terms that promotes visual arts literacy and establishes a foundation
for an art language to intelligently discuss the discipline.

Why do I have to study about dead artists?

We study about artists and art history to understand the development of
visual art from a cultural and historical perspective. The advantage of
studying art from a historical perspective gives the young artist a visual
language and understanding to develop his or her own art skills and artistic
expression.

Why can't I do what I want to when we make art?

The studio projects are designed to be a multi-faceted approach to visual
arts learning: (1)The student will be given a set of objectives for each
project (an art problem) where there is more than one answer. Cookie cutter
art is strongly discouraged and individual expression is promoted.(2) The
student will explore a variety of medium. Mastery is not the emphasis. (3)
The student will develop skills and a working knowledge of what is used to
create art (the elements) and how art is put together (the principles). (4)
The student is encouraged to self-evaluate (critique) during the studio
process and make changes to achieve a successful product.

I missed several days of class, do I have to make up the work?

Yes. The student has two days for every missed day of class to make up
assignments missed. The art instructor holds Tuesday afternoons open (3:00
PM to 5:00PM) after school for students to make up work. The student will
need to make arrangements for transportation home.

What is my grade in art?

The student will be given a bi-weekly progress report on the last day of the
week. If the student has an established account with the school, grades for
all classes, at any given day, are available online. Should the student's
grade fall below a 70% average, the parent will be contacted by the teacher.
