We needed fourteen 4 day moms for the girls and ten 4 day dads for the boys
and we exceeded exspectations. If it did not work out that you are not a cabin
sponsor; stay tuned as Robert and Rebecca have kept your info as every year
there is one or two emergencies and we have extra parents who can pitch hit.

Any parent who is not a cabin sponsor can come down as a day parent and I
will post more info about that later. Expect another post tommorrow or Monday
with more details.

Thanks again!

Beth and I left some of last years info up so parents and students can get a
sense of how this deal works and anticipate.

Adults only meeting Tuesday Aug 25th in A 206 for people who are helping with
Outdoor School. 6-7pm.

Will cover among other things:
-Camp policies
-Directions
-Expectations
-Sample schedule/Resource people
-Preliminary roster of cabin parents
-What to bring
-How we organize,much more, etc.

Just to reiterate what was in the summer packet.
* The trip is Oct 6,7,8, and 9th. Tuesday thru Friday. YMCA Camp Classen
locates on 2400 beautiful acres in the Arbuckles some 90 miles south of OKC.
* Six meals are served and students bring a sack lunch for the bus ride to
camp
* Almost all the class will end up going if it is like the ten previous years.
* The cabins are heated with flush toilets, hot showers, and bunks.
Sixteen to a cabin with two of those adults
* This is school- only OUTDOOR CLASSROOM- and it is fun; but is does include
a journal that is a grade. (An easy grade if one follows instructions.)

If you can not leave your child at home and do not have small children; they
can do hommework in the science room next door during the meeting.

Please make every effort to attend as we only have two meetings prior to
the Tuesday take off including this one. The second meeting is the last
Tuesday in September. September 29. 6-7 pm.

It is important that everyone turn in a physical and at least a partial pay
as soon as posssible; so we can get an accurate meal count. Even students who
think they might not be going should turn in a physical as most of them will
end up going if the past experience holds true.

We need some parents with covered trailers to haul luggage as the school buses
are equipped for this.

-------- LAST YEARS INFO BELOW THIS LINE ------------------------------

10/5 LAST MINUTE NOTES

OOPS! Mr. H forgot to ask for empty cardboard shoeboxes for the Shoebox
geophysics activity. Please email or contact Mr. Wells with the number of
shoeboxes you might bring. We need about forty or so.

OOPS! The meet place for the fossil hike is volleyball court; not eastside
of dining hall. The map is right; not the number of groups per activity
tally sheet.

UPDATE ON MATRIX SCHEDULE: Added world class naturalist John Preston for
a daytime presentation of skins and skulls.(Fits life science curriclumn
next year.) The updated schedule says FINAL. Recycle the old one. Minor
changes. I think all the waterfront and both hike times stayed the same.

We have three vehicles with trailer hitches; my truck which Craig Flowers and
Jeff Carlson will drive down with the trailer from the Griffths; Ron Ketch
will drive his rig on Tuesday and Friday. Boys should put their luggage in
these trailers. Both these trailers are fairly small. Dixie Hendrix has
ecured a trailer which is large and closed which will take all the Girls
luggage. Her friend Mr. Steve Higgs will be driving it. Mr. Carlson; Mr.
Flowers;and Mr. Ketch will need some help loading trailers. If the two cabin
sponsors split duties where one loads luggage and the other collects kids;
then it should work fine. If it is raining; one sponsor for sure needs to be
in the cafeteria with their group.

In any event, we should be able to stuff all luggage in sponsor vehicles
that does not fit into the the trailers. Those of you that have larger Suv
or wagon type vehicles be sure to park facking south on Ellison in front of
the school. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Wells will be directing traffic and trying to
get parents to unload quickly. Each vehicle if it becomes necessary to use
vehicles will be designated as a girls or boys luggage vehicle. Women should
sponsors take girls luggage that does not fit in the trailers irregardless
of cabin and the men do the same.

Your child should pick up a sponsor packet for you on Monday. It will have
name tags;cabin lists;maps; schedules; etc. If you or any of your students
need a clipboard then see Mr. Thomas at the front desk at the front door.
Mr. Thomas will have extra schedules; info; maps; etc. Combo for day parents
who might leave or arrive early or late in day.

Students should be in the building only to use the bathroom and fill water
bottles unless it is raining. Ask everyone to hit the bathroom prior to
9:15 so we can load buses.

The curb by the fence on Ellison needs to be clear for buses on Tueday am.

We have 147 students going and less than ten staying at regular school with
Mr. Chaffin and the elective teachers for various reasons not tied to money.
Those of you added some extra money to the mix; thank you. I can take a few
extra parents as of this Sunday as some of our students came up with some
unexpected money from Grandma or Uncle Bill, etc.(I will be calling Carl and
Angi today) Still, we do have a number of partial pays who I know really did
need the help. Thanks.

Your matrix schedule will see some revision as I added Mr. Preston on Wed
for four sessions of skins and skulls. John is a world class naturalist
as all of you will see Tuesday night. He is 76 and the last several years has
not done trails due to doctors orders; but he did set up the trails and we
have some parents with the background to teach his lessons and add some
insight of their own.

FINAL MEETING SEPT 30TH
A 206 MR H'S ROOM
6:00 PM

===========================================================================

Daytime parents

We can not have enough daytime parents. Just be sure to pick up a day parent
packet at school before you leave so you have the combo to the yellow gate
lock and proper maps and infromation. (This yellow gate will be
locked from the dark to dusk ) (The combo is 1028.) These will be in the
office starting friday the week prior to Oct 7th. Also, these will be on my
demo table Parent conference day. Camp Classen is 75 or so miles south of
downtown OKC just west of I 35. You can google the camp on the web for more
info.

Again, so as to keep the cost as low as we can; only the two prime cabin
parents are in the budget for most cabins. Bring a sack lunch, footgear
suitable for rocky terrain, rain gear and a backpack with two or three water
bottles.

10/7 Tuesday take off procedures are posted same as last year. Scroll down
below cabin lists

10/7 Bus List by last name. If students who have parents driving down ride
with parents then I can save the expense of one bus. Students will line up
alphabetically at 9:25 for check into bus. LINE UP BY LAST NAME.

Bus 1 Mr. H: A-G, PLUS Y LAST NAMES
Bus 2 Mr. Wells: H-0 LAST NAMES
Bus 3 Vice Principal Wilson: P-W LAST NAMES

Trailer pullers

Mr. Carlson
Mr. Flowers in red truck

Mr. Ketch in his SUV

Mr.Cloos?

Bring a sack lunch in a large plastic bag for Tuesday

Students whose parents are driving to camp on Tuesday will will ride in
a car so we can keep the bus list straight. On the way back those who want
to ride in a car also need a note. Again, I want to have this list by Monday
afternoon; so I do not have to mess with it Tuesday am. Email me if need be.
This should save us the cost.

What to bring list: Scroll down

Please leave cell phones at home; all the parents will have one.
Mary Ellen Ternes has all the camp numbers for true emergencies in either
direction and has agreed to be availiable 24/7 for the duration of camp.
Almost all the students do fine; but those who are homesick do not benefit
from a call from the house. Cell 706-5794 home 840-8312 work 552-2303.

10/ 4 Cabins/groups

This is the best that I can do and I did go to some effort. I did do my
level best to get everyone one person on their list. I did succeed in 9/10
cases; but not all. Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver and
the other is gold. Anyone not on the list let me know asap.

WHAT TO BRING LIST keep scrolling

9/10 Among the few things that I emphasized Parents night was reading.
Reading is a key to success. Especially in this class always read ahead.
Reading with understanding. Use the structure of the book. Master the key
terms so we can do the higher order thinking more easily in class and on
tests. Your student should be able to answer the questions at the end of
each section. If not, read again.

A second point of emphasis was I do check agendas and notebooks and lab
books. I really think that most sixth graders need to drastically improve
their organizational skills. If they will do things the way I suggest; then
they will be working smarter than they might otherwise. I do allow a
substantial fraction of the grade for the organizational stuff so encourage
them to keep an orderly planner and notebook.

9/30 -the final parents meeting and you should get your cabin
groups. Maybe sooner. Final details for the Oct 7-10 expedition.

Camp needs a meal number a week ahead so payment by September 29 would be
helpful.

Grades are a weighted average. Trust;but verify. Look on their grade grid.
Two quizes and at least six homeworks should be listed by Tuesday 9/10

Last, thanks again to our class parent liasons Angi and Mary Ellen

What to bring tips valid for October 07

Sponsors may want to bring a whistle, folding chair, some basic first aid
stuff plus wire brushes, extra brooms, plastic bags and even doormats to deal
with mud. There is a concrete porch with an overhang where muddy shoes can
be stored outside the cabin in plastic bags. Also, check the forecast
because a laptop with a slew of educationally appropiate DVDs may come in
handy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

OOPS! Mr. H forgot to add that we need shoe boxs. Card board shoe boxes!
If about every third person brings one we will have enough for
       for our shoebox geophysics lesson.

+Pick up a what to bring list ON THE COUNTER BY WINDOWS IN MR H"S ROOM if
you lost the one(s)sent home. Or, on the demo table Parnet Conferenc Day.

+Sleeping bag or liner or sheets and blankets and small pillow or better a
pillow case that you can stuff with a fleece vest or wool shirt

+Old rugged clothing for four days. Avoid too many cotton clothes. Check
weather on Sunday/Mon night.

+Extra sneakers/hiking shoes. Avoid open toed except for shower sandals or
loafers for the cabin. The idea is to leave your regular shoes outside the
cabins if the weather produces mud.

+Extra non-cotton socks. Wool,acrylic,polyester blends.

+Rain gear. Beg, borrow or steal decent raingear.
Synthetics or wool work better in wet weather than heavy hypothermic cotton.

+Large water bottle. Or multiple small ones.
+Toilet articles/towel/and flashlight
+Hat/bandanna or handerchief/sunscreen/bug spray preferably not in a spray
can

+Clipboard in a large plastic freezer bag
+Pencils and pens and erasers
+Several reading books and card games;chess;etc.

+Electonic gizmos are fine but please consider the risk of theft with
expensive devices. Electonic gizmos are for siesta time and not walking
around camp.

+Cell phones will be left home. Please. Almost all the cabin parents will
have one.

+Electronic devices are banned except to play games at siesta or near
bedtime. If your child gets homesick a cell phone is not always a good idea.
Calls/texts are not helpful.

+Please communicate unforseen real emergencies to the parent liason Mary
Ellen Ternes. Her numbers are cell 706-5794/ home 840-8312/ work 552-2303

+Fishing gear needs to packed carefully and given to a parent to take
separate from luggage.

+Binocs and telescopes are great; however exercise judgement given the cost
of the devices.

+Snacks need to be in tin cans. Skunks and other critters are
not welcome.

+Spending money for one pop and treat each night and maybe a t-shirt. 20
dollars is fine and less if you do not need a souvenir.

+Moms should bring curling irons.(Not every girl)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

+Daytime parents: Please take a day parent packet at the office desk with
information, maps, directions and the combo for the yellow gate lock. We
really do need extra parents for help at the Trout Unlimited fishing clinic,
rowboats, and relief for cabin sponsors. Just bring a sack lunch and hiking
gear and you will not be expensed to our budget. Packets avaiable friday the
week prior to trip.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

+Tuesady take off

Do not arrive before 8:15 unless you are a sponsor. Sponsors should arrive at
eight with the exception of the trailer people. Do not arrive later than
9:15. The buses will leave at 9:30 if everything goes perfect.

Bring a sack lunch/drink for bus ride in a day pack with raingear.

Do not ride bus to school and do not attend first hour.

Enter on 19th or north and turn south on Ellison.
Drop off student and luggage. Student can haul luggage to small trailer for
boys and large trailer for girls.

Park your car at Braums if you wish to see your student off to outdoor
classroom.

Students should stay out front and meet with their sponsors or go to the
cafeteria if it is raining.

Sponsors should park cars facing south on Ellison in the front of the school
Right out front space along the fence that borders the soccer field is
reserved for the 3 buses.

Friday we will be back around 1:50 pm. Sunshine come to the front and rain
check the cafeteria. Do not call the school any sooner. We will call when we
hit OKC. Students who ride with parents other than their own on the way home
should give Mr. Wells a written note at camp; otherwise you will ride the
bus.
