Each week students will read and listen to the selection of the week in a variety of formats: small group, with partners, silently, chorally, and read aloud. Three days a week the class will do rotations in which the students will rotate from guided reading with the teacher, assignments at their desk, and weekly activities. Skills that the students cover will vary each week, but we will always work on reading for meaning, understanding vocabulary, predicting, and making inference.
The Accelerated Reading Program is also an important componant for each student at Grove Valley. Students have taken the Star Test, and we will send Reading Logs home with each student. The Log will have a dated entry for each day throughout the school year. Students will record the amount of time they read each night at home, and parents will initial the entry. There is also a page indicating the reading level and the nine week goal. Notations will be made on the "Goal Sheet" as to the weekly points needed to insure he/she successfully achieves the nine week goal.
