Science

This year in science, we will use Foss and Delta Science . This is an inquiry based, hands-on, sensory learning opportunity for the students. The focus will be on learning through the experimental process in which students make hypothis, observe, study, record, and assess.

We are currently studying the food chain. We began this unit with the study of plants, what they need to be healthy, and what type of soil is best for growing plants. We have thus far conducted two experiments. One experiment gave students opportunity to study three different types of soil including our own local soil. They tested for sand, silt, and clay in all three soil samples. We then set up an experiment testing the variable "soil." We have planted rye seed in three different types of soil. Every two days the students examine the plants, measure, and report their information.

Our #2 experiment is testing the need plants have for sunlight. We have a control group and an experimentsl group for this experiment. Our experimental group has been without sunlight for one week. The students are measuring the height of the plants in the control group and the experimental group every two days and recording their findings.

Along with the experiments, we are establishing an ecosystem . A terrarium has been set up in which rye seed has been planted. The rye seed is up and looking very healthy. We will introduce crickets into the terrarium, and next we will add anoles. The students will observe first hand the food chain right inside our classroom.
