FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What will we be doing in this class? We will be BUSY with a variety of learning activities each week. Daily "warm-ups" may be in the form of a lesson review, puzzle, brainteaser, or game. Math concepts are often introduced through large or small group "labs" and are reinforced with individual practice as well as small group activities and assignments. Our curriculum is based on Oklahoma's Priority Academic Student Skills (P.A.S.S.) objectives for math. We also emphasize the concepts and skills tested on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) which is administered in March. If I am absent, how do I find out what I missed? You may check the day's assignment from my TeacherWeb page on the DCMS website. From http://www.deercreek.k12.ok.us/ms click on "Mrs. Graybill" and then on "Assignments". Another option would be to call the homework hotline or you can phone a friend and have him or her bring you the assignment, or see me if you know ahead of time that you will miss class. When will make-up tests/quizzes be given? Make-up tests/quizzes should be completed as soon as possible after you return to school, typically after school. Remember, you are generally allowed one day for each day of an absence to get make-up work turned in and tests/quizzes taken; however, special arrangements may be made with the teacher. Tell me ahead of time when you will be staying to make up a test or quiz. How will I use my three-ring binder in this class? I expect you to bring your three-ring binder to class every day. You will have four sections: Mathletics, Notes, Assignments, and Quizzes/Tests. I expect you to keep all handouts, assignments, and graded tests/quizzes in order by category. You will keep your daily Mathletics pages, which serve as "warm-ups" for each day. You will record lesson notes and practice problems in your Notes Section. You will keep all assignments from the textbook and worksheets in your Assignments Section. Notebook checks will be made randomly. Using your math three-ring binder also greatly facilitates preparation for tests/quizzes and eliminates questions about grades on specific assignments. What is the Basic Skills Test? The Basic Skills Test is a test on basic computation skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals). The test will be given each nine-week period for a test grade. The first problem missed will count off 20%, the second problem missed will count off 10%, and the remainder of the problems will be weighted according to the number of problems on the test. Any student who does not receive a perfect score on the test may retake the test once a week throughout the nine-week period until a 100% is achieved. The test will be given three times in class with subsequent tests given outside of class time. |
