Is this a hands-on science class?

Definitely! When the students walk into my classroom, they are considered
scientists. They will conduct many open-inquiry investigations where each
student will create his/her own hypothesis, conduct a test (experiment) of
the hypothesis, and communicate their results to others. We will all learn
from each other and make many exciting discoveries this year!

Why doesn't my 8th grader have a science textbook to bring home?

First of all, we simply don't use the textbooks on a regular basis. We will
use them throughout the year along with many other resources (internet,
professional journals, etc.) to provide background and extensions to each of
our investigations. It's simply not necessary for the students to haul
their heavy textbooks to and from class if we aren't using them everyday.
So, they are kept in my room. Students are allowed to check out textbooks
at any time if they have been absent or just need to take one home for extra
study. They must see me first so I can record the textbook number before it
leaves my classroom. Students are expected to return the books the next
day.
Also, students are required to keep a science notebook (3-ring binder). We
will set up our notebooks on the 3rd day of school. They will be required
to keep all class notes, vocabulary, handouts, study guides, graded papers,
etc. in their notebooks. These will be checked on a regular basis for a
completion grade based on whether or not students are maintaining an
organized and complete notebook. This notebook is their tool for studying
for tests/quizzes and completing homework and projects.
